Botman opens up about Milan links as ‘Newcastle felt just a little better’

By Isak Möller -

AC Milan had been linked with Sven Botman since the January window and despite reaching an agreement with the player, he ended up joining Newcastle. The defender has now opened up about this decision.

As captain Alessio Romagnoli is on his way out (expiring contract), Milan had identified Botman as the perfect replacement given his quality (and also that he’s left-footed). The negotiations, however, were complicated due to the competition from Newcastle.

In the end, Botman opted for Newcastle as Milan refused to increase their €30m offer for Lille. Furthermore, the chaotic situation with Paolo Maldini and Ricky Massara’s contracts probably played a big hand in the outcome of it all.

Speaking to De Telegraaf, as cited by Chronicle Live, Botman was asked about the interest of Milan and why he chose Newcastle in the end. He made it clear that the Premier League has always been a big dream of his.

“Ultimately, Newcastle United’s great project, in combination with playing in the Premier League, was the deciding factor. That last one has been a dream my whole life. AC Milan also gave me a good feeling, but Newcastle United felt just a little better in the end,” he stated.

  1. Ooooh you crying. The bullshit Italian media took you fools for a ride saying he didn’t want to come when all along he Newcastle was his first choice. And yeah money talks for everyone it’s how world works you thick idiots.

    1. What kind of idiot are you? Newcastle was his 1st choice? LOL. Why did it take so long to F-I-N-A-L-L-Y agree to them then?

Of course he has to say that. It wouldn’t look good in the eyes of his new club’s fans if he said “oh I really wanted to join Milan but that didn’t work out so here I am…”

      1. Not as much as a idiot as u thick deluded fans. It took long because Lille were constantly changing prices. As soon as the financial year was coming to a end they accepted and look a day later he’s here.

Even him saying with his own mouth u deluded fans still won’t believe it your media chats rubbish. English media all along said he wants to come your media was briefing the opposite just to save face. Absolute fact. Now go cry and get some money together to sign free agents. Deluded thick fans

        1. If anyone is deluded it’s Newcastle fans. Actually thinking they’re a more attractive football club than Milan and that they were Botman’s first choice hahaha. Money talks, and that’s the only reason he is in England right now and not in Italy. That’s it, arab oil money.

  2. What a fool! If he had ended up in Milan, he would have been bragging about how much more he liked Milan and how Maldini was his mentor. lol

  3. Why is everyone so upset about what he said? What is he suppose to say while he is presented as a new Newcastle player?
Do you expect him to say : This is not where I wanted to be, I wanted to go to Milan but Lille insisted I go to Newcastle because they offered way higher transfer fee?
    I mean c’mon

  4. Of course he has to say that. It wouldn’t look good in the eyes of his new club’s fans if he said “oh I really wanted to join Milan but that didn’t work out so here I am…”

  5. He waited for so long for Milan….. The Owners caused this. They didn’t renew M&M, they both can’t do anything without the owners support. Though I feel we don’t need this guy especially given his high price tag, a player that won’t be starting. I don’t see him benching any of our centre backs… Even De Ligt flopped at Juve despite his high price tag from Ajax.
Hopefully, we spend that money on CDK, Ziyech and a better Midfielder than Renato, cos the guy is injury prone…or better still we play Tonali in Kessie’s role. Tonali will keep getting stronger❤🖤

  6. Milan ownership makes me sick. If we can’t build on this Scudetto-winning season, then we’ll back back to fighting for the Europe League with players like Yepes, Honda and Cutrone sooner rather than later.
