TMW: Botman continues to shine for Newcastle – how Milan missed out on signing him

By Oliver Fisher -

Newcastle United got another win and another clean sheet yesterday to anchor themselves in the top four, and the impact of Sven Botman has been crucial in that.

TMW recall how Botman arrived in the summer and was able to quickly establish himself as a pillar in the Magpies’ defence, one that is the best in the league with only 11 goals conceded in 24 games, of which he has played 19.

Things could have been very different for the Dutchman, though. At the end of last season Milan had strongly set their sights on signing him from Lille, and there was a mutual interest too given the huge smile he displayed when asked about the rumours back in June.

However, Lille did not back down to any kind of pressure from the player or Milan as they were firmly set on collecting the most money they could, with the Rossoneri unable to match the almost €40m they managed to get from Newcastle.

Milan changed their strategies, preferring to spend certain amounts on other profiles, such as Charles De Ketelaere. The Belgian continues to struggle to adapt to Italy while Botman could hardly be shining more in the Premier League.

  1. and what would Botman bring here? would be useless, Kjaer isnt retiring anytime soon, Kalulu is good enough Tomori is a guarenteed starter and Gabbia even improved this season

    1. What would Botman bring? Everything that’s missed on this Milan’s defence. Do you even realize how many we concede from crosses (mainly headers) so far? Kalulu looks like he just got a factory reset. Kjaer battles with injury. Gabbia is always a back up. And Tomori hasn’t been his real self after that contract extension.

        1. Whether it’s worth it / not, we can’t really answer it can we, as it didn’t happen. The fact that Maldini was after him, before he went to CdK, certainly told us something. And now, is CdK worth the 32 mil? For now, he’s def not. In the future? We never know.

Not saying that he’d solve eveything, but he’d bring something definitely. Stating that he’d be useless is just a apathetic bitter comment.

  2. I am a Newcastle fan and have to say AC missed out on some player he ooozes class and is still so young so will only get better. To say he wouldn’t of brought anything to your team makes you sound very bitter have you even watched him play ?

  3. 😂😂😂🤣🤣🤣🤣hahahaha. Its almost expected something like this would come out. Its always nice when you keep a clean sheet in one game and get your flower. But then they completely forego the performance in another game. Versus Sheffield Wednesday which they lost he was atrocious, almost turned the ball in twice in his own goal, once almost to the opposite player and the other through a deflection. The two goals by Sheffield he had ownership of. He got turned by his man who he didn’t close down properly due to his lack of pace. And the second goal was also due to bad positioning and you guessed it…a lack of pace. His position though overall seemed to have improved but the pace is lacking. And he is a bit of a threat on set pieces so there’s the benefit there. Its just funny though. You can’t buy everyone

  4. Milan missed for not signing him? lol. Milan is an empty barrel. They gamble with CTK and lost. Its gonna be long time till we get another
30+ mil player, Only if a miracle champions league semi happens else back to 4-7 mil players

    1. Yeah 6 months and already a failure huh? If he succeeds later you’ll pretend you trusted him all along

      this is getting dumb fyi

      1. What would Botman bring @Bould??? LOL. Everything we are currently missing friend. Left footed CB who can initiate play from the back; excellent with the ball at his feet and in the air; fits with our policy of adding young players with upside and re-sale value; would have allowed the undersized Kalulu to move to his more natural position of RB where he adds more speed and crossing ability than Calabria; allows Tomori to more to his better position of right sided CB; helps add more size and strength that we lost with Kessie in the middle of the park; etc…Shall I go on? Lol. Kajer is 34 coming off a major knee injury and still hasn’t played consistently. So ya what would Botman have done??? Not much according to you apparently LOL. Trust in Maldini. IF Maldini said we needed Botman you get him amd don’t let 3M stand in the way. Same with whatever other player he identifies as a need. He knows more about talent than all of us including you and me my friend. What is sad is that he is forced to chose one vs the other with the lack of $$$ Redbird has provided (we should have signed BOTH Botman and CDK) and as it looks now we have zero budget for the winter market. Fkn shame.

  5. Almost every day a new article comes out about a miss in the market, which is normal after the market Milan had over the summer.
We read about Enzo, Kolo Muani, Botman, Sanches, Kvara, but probably the biggest regret is Dybala.
I was against his signing solely because of his injury history but he has been great for Roma and a player with his skills is exactly what we need right now, someone that can create for himself and others.
Even worse mistakes was done by Inter who actually chose Lukaku over Dybala
