AC Milan and Inter have shared San Siro since 1947, but talks of a different direction have been rife in recent years. It does not seem like a split will be happening, though.
The talk of stadiums has been ongoing for the past year, but there has been little progress, if any. Any talk of a new home has been forcibly doubt-ridden after years of hypotheses with no progress, but it seems things could be changing now.
In the past year, talk has been rife about San Siro and San Donato, but it seems things are heading towards the former option, which is somewhat ironic considering how the clubs opted against a renovation of the stadium initially.
Nevertheless, the proposition of staying put has been growing, and La Republicca’s Milan edition, relayed by Milan News, has stated that by the summer, the two clubs could be in control of the stadium, who will then renovate the stadium, which will include a large part of the ground being demolished.
In addition to this, a new stadium may be built next to it, with commercial and office spaces, parks, sports areas, a hotel and a museum also being built. The report suggests that the purchase will cost around €197 million for each club, and an official offer is expected by the end of February.
Round and round we go. Just renovate San Siro and be done.
uhhhhh look at that picture of that incredible beauty. Imagine it completely shined up and renovated. That would be glorious!
I love San Siro. I hope Milan and Inter indeed purchase it from the city and renovate it. Not to forget, the subway station right then and there is so convenient, and this is something that doesn’t exist in San Donato where the subway station is very far from the proposed site of the stadium. So I see this as very positive. It is regretful, though, that Milan has invested 55 M Euro on the San Donato project and that money is wasted and gone; could have financed a nice player signing for us.
On the other hand, it is conceivable that Milan forcefully moving onto the San Donato project has forced the hand of the Milano mayor so that this will finally be solved, and San Siro will become the property of Milan and Inter. I don’t mind sharing the stadium with Inter. I do care about having the full benefits of ownership (like Juve, Atalanta, and Sassuolo own their stadiums) without paying rent to the city.
Udinese, Frosinone, Cremonese, and Albinoleffe all own their stadiums too, completing the 7 clubs in Italy that own them, together with Juve, Atalanta, and Sassuolo.
So currently in Serie A only 3 clubs own their stadiums; Juve, Atalanta, and Udinese.
The fact that we don’t own ours impacts enormously on our revenues. We get only 16% of our income from San Siro while Real Madrid gets 30% from their owned stadium (which sounds low but is huge because a good chunk of Real’s revenue comes from merchandising, given that they are arguably the most popular club in the world and sell more jerseys worldwide than any other club).
Real Madrid gets 93% of the match day revenue for games played in their stadium. Also clubs that own their stadiums can get lucrative naming rights contracts with big businesses. Juve gets 74% of their match day revenues. Milan, less than 20%.
Juventus increased their total earnings by 66% once they owned their stadium, and Sassuolo by 77%.
This is data from an interesting research paper I looked up online.
I’ve said it before, I’ll say it again – they’ll still be arguing about this and coming up with new wacky proposals in 30 years’ time.
