Coach believes Tonali ‘will become stronger’ than Barella and labels Kjaer the ‘strongest of all’

By Oliver Fisher -

Some very complimentary words have been aimed at two of AC Milan’s key players from the former Brescia coach Luigi Cagni.

Cagni spoke to TMW radio and was asked to name players that he is an admirer of, and the ex-Genoa and Verona boss talked about Simon Kjaer and Sandro Tonali in particular, with his comments transcribed by PianetaMilan.

Which defender do you like best? “I like De Ligt, but also Tomori. The strongest of all, however, is Kjaer but he is made of glass. I have been saying for two years that Pioli had to leave Romagnoli out. It was a great promise but when he arrived at Milan he has not grown up anymore.

Cagni on Tonali: “I am also happy with Tonali, who has grown up after last year’s problems. He will become stronger than Barella.”

Kjaer arrived at Milan on an initial loan spell in the winter window of 2020 and has been credited with helping the team turn their fortunes around after a pretty disastrous first half of the 2019-20 campaign, along with other figures such as Zlatan Ibrahimovic and obviously head coach Stefano Pioli.

Tonali meanwhile joined in summer 2020 and after a difficult first season adapting to a top club and to a two-man midfield, the young Italian seems to have hit the ground running in the current campaign.
