Cairo confirms Milan wanted Buongiorno and reveals background: “We met for dinner”

By Oliver Fisher -

The president of Torino, Urbano Cairo, has once again made it clear that Alessandro Buongiorno is not for sale amid the rumours suggesting that AC Milan could make a late attempt to get him.

A couple of weeks ago it seemed as though Milan were going all-in to try and get Buongiorno, who they considered to be an ideal centre-back for the present and future of the club.

Reports had said that Cairo was unlikely to accept a January sale, at least with Milan’s current offer in mind (€25-30m, made up of cash and the inclusion of Lorenzo Colombo).

In his public declarations the Torino No.1 has always made it clear that he does not intend to sell the 24-year-old and now, with a week of the window left, he seems almost certain to stay put.

Cairo spoke just before the Lega Assembly to the reporters who gathered outside the building and he was once again asked about the future of the Italy international, with TMW relaying his comments.

Was there something between Buongiorno and Milan?

“Nothing happened, Milan were simply interested but we and the player said he wasn’t for sale. It was all very simple, we met for dinner to tell each other but a phone call would have been enough. We promised ourselves not to talk about it again, we and the player said very clearly no.”

How much would he cost?

“I don’t know, I haven’t thought about it.”

Do you like Colombo?

“Colombo which one? Cristoforo? (Laughs). I’m not talking about other people’s players, but he is a good striker.”
