Calabria: “Against Atalanta they gave us up for dead, but we only had to win”

AC Milan defender Davide Calabria has revealed his delight that the team were able to answer their doubters by beating Atalanta on Sunday.

After a fantastic season for the full-back, Milan confirmed yesterday via their official website that Calabria underwent an operation on a sports hernia. His recovery time is estimated to be 6 weeks, the club have confirmed, which all of a sudden makes the Euros ‘snub’ seem less damaging.

Today’s edition of La Gazzetta dello Sport has given a sneak peak of the longer interview with Calabria that will come out tomorrow on Sportweek, with his comments relayed by MilanNews.

“Against Atalanta they gave us up for dead, but we only had to win a match against a great team, which in this championship we had already done.,” he said.

There were some eyebrows raised when Calabria was not named among Roberto Mancini’s squad for the upcoming European Championships which start next month after a fantastic season for the right-back that saw him bounce back brilliantly following a difficult 2019-20 campaign.

“The dream of facing Messi and returning to the national team? I think I deserve it and I think it will happen sooner or later,” he responded.
