AC Milan defender Davide Calabria insisted that the clash he had with coach Sergio Conceicao was a ‘misunderstanding’ that has now been sorted.
For virtually all of the 90 minutes it looked like being another disappointing afternoon for Milan in Serie A as Parma twice led through Cancellieri and Del Prate, even being ahead in the 93rd minute of the game.
However, from somewhere the Rossoneri found that fighting spirit which has already been seen in numerous comebacks under Conceicao. The equaliser came in the third minute of six added through Tijjani Reijnders, then Samuel Chukwueze bundled in a winner a couple of minutes later.
The coach had to be separated from Calabria at full-time after the pair had a quite heated face-to-face disagreement before the team and some coaching staff stepped in.
Calabria faced the media after the full-time whistle and he gave his take on the game and also the incident with the coach at the end. MilanNews transcribed his comments.
What happened at the end?
“Honestly, these are things that happened on the pitch: a misunderstanding between the two of us. The adrenaline was really high and we cleared things up, we didn’t understand each other.
“We fixed things: it won’t be the first or the last time you see it. It’s common in football. I also apologise because it’s not a nice thing. The most important thing is the team and having turned the game around.”
What changed in the second half, were you more vertical and incisive?
“We lacked a few penetrating runs in the first half. They played well, they move well, they have good players up front. We lacked quality in the area.”
How are you personally? It has been a strange season with Emerson Royal being signed and now Kyle Walker…
“Good question, the most sincere of all. It’s not a positive year like others have been. There are difficult situations, even private and personal ones that no one knows about. I don’t even want to talk about them too much.
“I want to end this season in the best possible way for the good of the team, which is what I care about most, even more than myself at times. Honestly, I’m thinking about staying focused on this thing, having grown up with this shirt.
“Then there are situations like today that can happen but they are part of the journey. It wasn’t easy but I hope it ends better.”
Embarrassing attitude by Calabria
Chill dude give him a break. We should support our players when they are struggling.
Forza Davide.
Calabria was a captain of the team… no matter what his performances were , he should be treated like a captain even from the coach
Forza Calabria
When you think about that Milan went into this season with Calabria, Theo and Leao being teams captains and leaders.
None of them can lead flies to sh!t.
First thing Conceição did was give the armband to Maignan. That’s all you need to know about the leadership of Calabria, Theo and Leao.
As usual your take is bunch of nonsense. Maignan was made the captian before Conceicao even came. Also what has Maignan lead so far? He hardly even speaks to the judges. Calabria has always been there for the team and stood up when needed for the rest of the players and the team. But you wouldn’t know that since you started watching Milan last season.
Ha ha 😂
Nice try, buddy.
Are your feelings still hurt about something I have said in the past?
Maignan was one of the captains, but he never wore the armband if Calabria, Theo, Leao, or Tomori were on the pitch. Since Conceição became Milan coach he wears the captains armband even if all 4 of them are there with him.
But you wouldn’t know it since you don’t know what you are watching.
Come back when you have learned some emotional intelligence so you can write something based on facts, not just based on your hurt feelings.
Another childish brain dead responce from you as usual. I couldn’t care less for what you have said. Im just telling you that your takes are always nonsense. Leao has never been the captian. Fonseca only gave him the armband once to motivate him. Theo was our captian since Calabria was rearly playing. Then they moved from Theo to Maignan. All of that was done before Conceicao came to the club.
The whole captain armband is absolutely irrelevant. This is not about who’s worn the captain armband the most, this is about a player who’s very good in his position (Mike) and a player who isn’t (Calabria). Simple as that, nothing bad or disrespectful about that, let’s grow up and out of these things, this is merely professional not personal.
I made a longer comment but it didn’t appear. In short, a captian should have certain status in the club and also be fuent in the language of the league so he can talk with refs and contest ref decisionc if needed. Gabia woud be a much better fit than Maignan according to me. Who just by being a GK is already in disatvantage whn something happens at the other end of the field.
To be a good captain it doesn’t matter if you are Italian or not. It is all about the mentality and personality. You have to be respected by your teammates. One that is good in his position. I don’t see Gabia as one. He isn’t good enough and doesn’t have the personality. He is the best we got. That is not enough in my view. On the other hand I wish we had a captain that could talk to the referees if situation is so. One that is a defender or midfielder. But we don’t have one in those positions there are worth it to be a captain. The only player we got that is worth to be a captain is Maignan. He got it all.
I agree that mentalty and personality is important. But i don’t see Maignan having anything more in that regard than Gabbia, nor i see players giving him some special respect. Gabbia is youth product/has been here way longer and just by that he has higher status than Maignan in my opinion. Of course we don’t know them personaly but in general players who are longer in the club carry higher status.
Calabria knows he is gone after Walker signed. No more subpar RB for Milan
lol did you know how Walker was playing in Man City in the last few months? He was utter rubbish.
So?? Every player in Manchester City was playing like utter rubbish in the last few months, including Foden, De Bruyne, Gvardiol, Haaland, Bernardo, Gundogan, that’s why they got the results they did. What’s your point??
And even “an utter rubbish” Walker is still a colossal upgrade over Emerson so why complain, right? 😀 😀 😀
I never understood why both managers have always picked up Emerson Royal and not Calabria, despite the bad performance from the Brazilian. I understand Davide, who was rather good today.
Same reason why Loftus was played so much. When you get a new player you want to justify bringing him.
He’s just not good enough, that’s why he’s not truly been considered for the national team even though that’s far from the most competitive position in the team in terms of options. Mancini thought the same, Spalleti thinks the same. He played the most with Pioli because for the longest time objectively Pioli didn’t have options, similar to the left side, Theo would have been forced to play so much even he was a way worse player than he is because there is simply no better option but that wouldn’t mean he’s good. Calabria is not good enough, why is that so hard to understand? Can’t hide a truth bigger than the Sun
Calabria in the past was way better. He might not have been the best RB in Seria A but in couple of seasons he was the second best. And defensivley he was even the best stats wise. So saying he wasn’t good enough for Milan is a stretch. He is still better them Emerson tho. He started playing under Mihailovic, very long time ago.
Emerson is Furlani / Moncada pawn and they told the manager to keep playing him despite he plays like crap.
Another fool that has to invent scenarios in their head rather than accept that Calabria just isnt any good.
How crazy do you have to be to believe something like this?
Yes, management told two different managers to play Emerson over Calabria even at the expense of losing games. And then both managers who are trying to win games just went along with it even if it meant losing their jobs. And they assumingly told them to start Emerson even when they were trying to sell him to another team??? Makes absolutely no sense.
I think we have some flat earthers on here.
You Italian on this site are hypocrites, Calabria is a terrible defender that can’t even make national team sub, you never see anything wrong with his defending, but you’re quick to condemn Emerson who is better, I don’t seem to understand
the calabria vs emerson debate will not end. Emerson is only faster. thats all. Both should not be starting for us. The fact is, if Emerson was any good, Walker would not be here at all. He was a transfer blunder but management will not admit it.
I think management did admit it by signing walker. What do you want them to do call a presser to trash Emerson 😂
“the calabria vs emerson debate will not end. Emerson is only faster. thats all. ”
Is he really? I doubt that. He might look faster but at the end of the day he’s still useless rubbish. 😀
Calabria was having a great match. Before the coach decide to sub him off just as he did eith Leao.
Immediately he was sub out musa took his spot and made a mistake that lead to Parma taking the lead. No player on the Milan bench reach to that goal except Calabria, he felt hurt for being taking out and then the team conced a goal.
I think he question the coach choice after the final whistle
But all in all 3point won
He was having a good game defensively, offensively his crosses were bad with the last one being to the tribunes.
The game was 1-1 with no creativity from our side, so it’s understandable that the coach wanted to bring more offense into the team.
These things do happen in football, so I hope it won’t have lasting consequences.
we last had good crossers during cafu’s era, maybe oddo tried. Abate too was hounded for his lack of crossing ability. that attribute has not been successfully scouted and fixed in a long while.
…and whoever told you that games are won by few people having a good time in the pitch.
Match are won both tactically and mentally. The coach simply wanted to win the match at all cost. I don’t think there’s any other reason why he would sub a defender for an attacker. So, mister, if a defender is having a good time on the pitch and the team is loosing, should the defender be allowed to have his good time on the pitch or add attacker to overwhelm the opponent and force them to make mistakes?
But That was Man City, this is AC Milan and seria A , not premier league….I think if Walker will be fit , definitely Calbria won’t play until the end of season from start of match..
Milan is lacking RB since years, and Calabria got an Honour to carry Armband…..which will for sure his biggest Honour in whole life.I dont know if this is the right way to show his gratitude.Conceisao has right…the group has no mentality,no character.Puli,Fofana,Reijnders,Pavlović,Maignan,Tomori are fighters, they ern their money at ACM,but those who are supposed to be carriers, who are longer at Club are so….so…I dont want to be too harsh, they just look like they are on holiday.Theo, once a fast train looks like 10 years old boy, totaly out of tempo,Rafa has 10 good minutes in 90,Musah is our best wanderer on field, always half lost,Chuki, sorry, but 100% incompletey player, should try another league,RLC same as in England,50% not ready,Morata+Abraham practicaly of no use in 16.-er,Jović even worse,Emerson—-clown,Okafor not enough,With such player list we can be happy that club is still alive.I am on Conceisaos side…..Forza Milan, good luck!We are going to need it…
SALENCE, AGREE 10000000 PERCENT !!!!
Calabria played good game. Much better than Emerson games. Calabria was in the team of CL before few days, voted by UEFA… Why nobody daid nothing about that? TAKING captains duties from Calabria and giving them to Goalkeeper who is one decade less in Milan shirt is very disrespectful move from Conseicao. Also very stupid move, becouse acording to new rules only captain can speak with officials. And Milan captain is minimum 50 meters away from them, stupid donkey move.
I used to think you were reasonable, especially with your profile name “Maldini”. I thought you were more thoughtful than others here.
If what determines a captain is how many meters away the captain is to the game, then the like of Buffon, Casillas, Chilavert, to mention a few wouldn’t have been captains of their various teams during their playing days.
I’m looking out for those of you that will come here to say the management hates Italians by the time Calabria is asked to leave. Especially, if you guys could find a lame reason to justify what happened today in front of all the spectators.
Do you know why Buffon, Casilias have been made captians? Out of respect cause they were a part of the team for very long time. But yes even then it was disatvatage to have a GK captian and majority of the teams preffered other positions.
There is so much more to being captain than speaking to the ref.
Indeed, when the keeper is captain there is a designated outfield player who speaks to the ref. So there is nothing lost.
Sure there is, like for example being connected to the club and attached to the club so he is passionate to motivate the others… i explained that in previous comments. Maignan couldn’t care less for the club. He wanted to leave for a bigger sallary few months ago and now he is the captain lol. Yes the designated player is called the captian. The ref dosen’t have to listen to anyone else complaining to him.
This should be the end of Calabria’s playing time. It doesn’t matter what there discussion was. If he can’t be trusted by his coach (to the point of approaching him in the dressing room or better still, wait for the next training, when everyone is calmer to make inquiries of the coach’s tactical approach during the game), then he can’t be trusted by his to play.
…and for some of the fans here that are trying to justify that incident after the game, AC Milan don’t deserve to have you as her fan.
Period!
When you guys are grown enough and are given the responsibility to manager other people, you will understand what it feels like having a member of your team openingly launching and arguing with.
I am grown enough and I mange many right now.
Do we know what happened?
As a manager I’ll take a beat to learn what the problem is before making absolute statements. Given Calabria long standing with the team I will even forgive in the right circumstances.
Discipline is non-existent because the players see that certain “talents” are allowed to go scot-free with some attitudes and others get flak for doing the same.
There are no standards in this Milan; neither are traditions honored; most take it as their well-paying 9-5 job. thats all. No strings attached.
Calabria should be sell out by Acmilan fans he doesn’t deserve to be Acmilan team.
Walker, is a dead wood, and Milan is only good for mid table position with clueless arrogant know nothing management. Watch Milan play is nauseating if you did only witnessed the flamboyance of the league winning team of Maldini/Massara
This isn’t news. Men displaying their masculine energy is not for the public to criticize. They are grown adults, they talked behind closed doors with each other, they moved on as you do, and that is that. Talking about it further, is for non-men.
Something fundamentally wrong with a lot of the fan boys in here. I stand with the coach.
Players must respect the coach decision, they may yell or say something unpleasant. There’s a time and place to settle it, certainly not in front of your teammate or fan. Who the he’ll Calabria think he is Messi, Mbappe, Haaland or Ronaldo. Even Ronaldo had his contract terminated for disrespecting his coach. You guys are a bunch of kids you doesn’t understand what it means to be professional
Bye bye…
Pretty sure Milan have always had the rule that it is the player with the most appearances who was made the captain. Hence Calabria, then Theo, then on occasion Rafa, Mike or Tomori if the others weren’t playing. It’s a flawed rule which Conceicao immediately publicly disagreed with and changed when he arrived as he acknowledged the captain should be the player with the best leadership qualities, personality, influence etc, not simply the player who plays the most games. Good move by Conceicao, I do think Mike has the characteristics for captaincy however I do feel Mike’s influence on the pitch can be a bit limited given he is the goal keeper and can’t get around the pitch and communicate with everyone including refs etc.
