Calabria discusses marking Mbappe and Milan’s situation: “We are truly united”

By Euan Burns -

Davide Calabria has said that AC Milan are ‘truly united’ after their Champions League win over Paris Saint-Germain in which he had to try and mark Kylian Mbappe out of the game.

Speaking to Sky Sport Italia (via Milan News), the Italian defender explained that the 2-1 win and the great performance were exactly what the team was looking for at this moment.

“It was what we were looking for. We truly are a united group, we’ve been talking these days. We lacked results more than performances, what better match to show who we are? The fans have been incredible,” Calabria said.

There was a lot of soul-searching and tough conversations after the weekend defeat to Udinese in Serie A, a real low point in the season for the Rossoneri.

Calabria explained that the team should have done more and showed a different attitude in that game.

“It was a normal confrontation. We must not let what happens around us get us down. We have to keep working like this. We should perhaps have done something more and this match showed that we put the right attitude on the pitch,” he said.

Calabria was handed one of the hardest jobs in football at San Siro, which is to mark PSG and France star Mbappe. He did a great job given the Frenchman did not get a goal or assist, but Calabria pointed out how quickly he can hurt teams.

“It’s a question of attention. In the first half I lost sight of him for five seconds and he passed behind me thinking he was offside. He has incredible strength. It was a great team effort from both the midfielders and Tomori,” he said.

  1. From my point of view,Calabria is underrated while player like thiaw is overrated. This team need that energetic fighting spirit which is the only thing the team is lacking and pioli should stick to 4-2-3-1. Which I also think Milan need a partner who is strong like Tomori and left footed preferably compare to an overrated thaiw. Only a fool will continue saying Calebria is a trash defender… He always overcame top players when hit the form and fit.

  2. He adjusted after the first few times MBappe got past him but after that he was exceptional against the world best. He kept showing MBappe the touchline knowing his cut back would meet Reinjders (the benefits of a double pivot). His agility helps him as well as he’s short and doest get turned as much as a taller defender would.
