Calabria touched ‘deeply’ by Mihajlovic’s passing: “He was the one who launched me”

By Oliver Fisher -

Davide Calabria has reflected on the relationship that he had with former head coach Sinisa Mihajlovic, who sadly passed away at the age of 53 yesterday.

Mihajlovic revealed in 2019 that he had been diagnosed with leukaemia but soldiered on through three rounds of treatment and even kept his role as Bologna’s head coach before being sacked in September. However, it was confirmed yesterday that he has passed away.

Milan fans will remember the free-kick specialist as being the head coach of the Rossoneri during the 2015-16 campaign and among the players that he took a chance on was Calabria, promoting him from the Primavera.

Now the full-back wears the captain’s armband for Milan, and he reacted to the news during an interview with Milan TV, with his words relayed by SempreMilan.it.

“It’s always hard to find the words in these moments. On behalf of all of Milan, we offer our condolences to his family, we are close to them, we know about the difficult time,” he said.

“I have always felt affection for him, he was the one who launched me at this club and into this world of greats. In the last match at San Siro, I had never done it before, I felt like giving him my shirt as a thought to thank him. The news touched us deeply.”
