Calabria opens up on Milan exit: “I didn’t want to have anything to do with certain people”

It is almost a year since Davide Calabria left AC Milan, and he has spoken out about his exit and his new adventure in Greece.

Calabria’s long journey at Milan came to an end earlier this year, with his contract expiring in the summer. The choice not to renew him was made, and he spent the second half of the season on loan at Bologna, who did not end up signing him permanently.

Given that he is a boyhood Milanista it was a bit of a painful exit for the Italian, in addition to the fact that one of the final moments of note was a spat with Sergio Conceicao on the field. After a lot of speculation about where he might end up, Calabria joined Panathinaikos in the Greek Super League.

Calabria gave an interview to Rivista Undici where he discussed the reasons that led him to leave the Rossoneri, as well as the importance of receiving constant psychological support, with his comments relayed by Radio Rossonera.

Regarding his experience in Greece, he stated: “It’s something new, very different from what I was used to. Sometimes I’m very positive, other times I struggle a bit. Overall, I’m satisfied.”

On leaving Milan, Calabria added: “As a fan, playing for AC Milan was my dream, and I achieved it. I have no regrets. There were some things that hurt a little, and I think I was the one who suffered the most. It was never my intention to leave.

“I didn’t want to have anything to do with certain people anymore. Sartori had been looking for me since the beginning, and he told my agent: ‘If he ever has a fight with the manager, know that we’re here for you.’ Two days later at San Siro, what we all saw happened.”

        1. I agree Joey T but other people wont see it that way as a lot of people around seems to hate the fella. It was a bit the same when Abate played with us as well.

          1. Being not as bad as Emerson Royal doesn’t mean that he is a good player.
Bologna didn’t want to keep him and now he is playing for Greek league’s Bologna
Nobody hates the fella. Saelemaekers helping him out and doubling whoever Calabria was supposed to defend made Calabria fool some people that he was actually a semi decent player.
Abate was a much better player than Calabria.

          2. Well I’d even prefer him in the team compared to athekame.
Both Calabria and Abate has actually in some seasons had the best rb stats in Serie A and yes I do believe that some people hated those players.

    1. He actually started in 4 consecutives serie A games with Bologna which Bologna won all of them. It was the only time last season Bologna won 4 consecutive serie A games, but after his injury, he seems to have fallen out of favour and wasn’t used as the main RB again. I didn’t watch any Bologna game that wasn’t against us (and he never played more than few minutes against us) so I’m only reading from the available stats.
Overall he was never a stellar player although he did more than well between 2020 and 2022, but it’s sad to see his story end like this.
Also from his comments, you can feel how bitter he is about how Conceição and I assume Zlatan treated him.

  1. Wish he was still here. Didn’t deserve to get axed just because of Sergios brain dead circus he created. We axed both Calabria and Kalulu in one year and tried to replace them with 2 guys who didnt even last a full year. Emerson and Walker signings should genuinely have someone fired, absurd transfers. Not to mention the complete travesty of mediocrity that was Felix. A year for the dumpster. Davide would be a decent backup even now, certainly better than athekame. Just like how Adli woulda been a good off the bench option when Fofana and Jashari went down injured. But we dont do common sense around here. After all, were currently scrambling to find a striker cuz our GeNiUs management got rid of 4 strikers in 1 window, jovic Abraham Colombo and Camarda, despite bringing in a coach who uses 2 strikers at all times. Brilliant….

    1. We had a striker that thrives in a striker pairing, got rid of him & signed an attacking midfielder (whom after 4 months is still on 0 league goals) to replace him.
Now they are looking to sign another injury-prone striker who is also on 0 league goals (despite having two themselves) with his current team.

      Brilliant indeed!

  2. Washed and bitter . Honestly feels like he took being at the club for granted and realized he wasn’t indispensable until it was too late

    1. Nah, anyone would feel offended if you were axed from a club you support all your life based on made up excuses, and proceed to witness them bring in players far worse than you. He had the best defensive stats at some point . That’s something none of our right backs might ever achieve.
The altercation with conceicao was the final straw. Sergio was totally out of line. If a player provokes you, you don’t pull a stunt like Mancini had with balotelli on live TV with your club captain.

      1. I’m 100% in agreement with you, Calabria had a very good performance with PSG Kilian Mbappe and this is also seen against Napoli Kavar. in the Ucl

  3. He is definitely 100X better than Emerson “thrash” Royal, and the way he was discarded wasn’t the best way, now about his ability, he is good in his own way but clearly not a Milan standard but good for the bench
