Calabria statement

Calabria responds to ‘invented situations’ via Instagram story – photo

Davide Calabria’s situation at AC Milan has been on a downward path since the summer, and now, he has spoken about things.

When Emerson Royal joined in the summer, the Brazilian was not guaranteed a place in the starting XI and his arrival was meant to help Calabria. However, the former Tottenham man has seen more game time.

Since then, the Italian has struggled for minutes, mainly due to injury, but when he has been given chances, he has not massively impressed. On Wednesday, the situation reached a somewhat climax, with the defender ignoring the head coach Paulo Fonseca, and today, he has responded to things on his Instagram. These are his words:

“Hello everyone. I feel obliged to provide clarity.

“Over the last few months, I have let a lot of things slide, avoiding responding to ‘unpleasant’ or invented situations in order not to waste time and energy. Perhaps I should have done so even earlier. Today I think the time has come to say a few words.

“As in the past, a lot of misinformation has been circulating in recent days about me and our team. Fake news that deserves no weight, but which I now believe requires a response to protect my image and that of our team.

“These inferences about field dynamics, various confrontations and my private life do not correspond to the truth, they only create confusion and division. I ask for respect for me, for our work and for the club we represent.

“Constructive criticism is part of our job, but falsehoods are not. I urge everyone to check before spreading news that can harm people or our environment. Our focus remains on the field, where every day we work with the utmost professionalism to improve.

“I will not allow anyone to undermine my love and commitment to my favourite team. Thanks to those who always support us. Forza Milan!”

      1. Whether you see it or not that’s a more of a you situation.

Having this attitude is nice as a captain but his biggest weakness is him getting outrun all the time. He’s good at 1v1 but when he has to chase he always loses. He’s too inconsistent and that RB role has been our weak link for ages. As a captain he needs to step up.

        Is it clear now?!

          1. Good old “video gamer” story about pace being everything. When will these guys learn? Never. They should try to play the game themselves instead of video games to see that pace isn’t everything. There’s far more to the game than just racing who’s the fastest.

  1. Forza Calabria, come back to your best Captain. Couple of years back there was Calabria- De lorenzo debate and we need that Calabria.

  2. There’s something I want to share about brought weakness to our 4-2-3-1 system of play is that Acmilan we defend alot Acmilan should change that pattern we be more attacking minded like once the ball start we collect the ball we press in their opponent field and score goals we should not even allow the opponent to even hold the ball talk more of the opponent playing with the ball at our half field we must change that method of playing is very wrong.

  3. I dont think Calabria deservers the amount of crap people give him. He is definitely not a top top player but he works hard and going forward he is actually quite good.. If he could get a bit faster that would solve a lot of things

    1. I’m sorry you’re very much part of the problem.

Your first sentence defends him and then the rest of your post insults him.

I’ve no idea what a ‘top player’ is but he’s achieved things in his career that less than 1% of footballers have achieved including a Scudetto win.

He like so many others of the 1%-era are consistently written off and disrespected to the point that there’s only about 5 of them left. Meanwhile players signed since who have presided over the steady to decline of the club are celebrated.

All because of some superficial, FIFA-style characteristics like ‘speed’. Nevermind the fact that Calabria wouldn’t be playing as an elite FB if he lacked the requisite speed to compete, it also shows a distinct lack of understanding of what real life football is about.

Whats noticeable when Calabria plays RB is the team’s actually got a defensive shape. When the ball is on the left hand side you can see him dropping in to CB and calling the RW back.

When the ball is on his side you can him organising the defence to limit the space bringing in teammates to double up.

The result is he rarely needs to tackle or to deal with 1v1s. When he does I can honestly say he’s one of the best 1v1 FBs I’ve seen.

The number of times he’s come out on top against wingers is remarkable. On Wednesday night the left winger was taken off at half time. That’s not the first time that’s happened.

There is no greater sign of a respect for a full back than when that happens. It’s the equivalent of a goal.

My only criticism of Calabria is that in the last couple of seasons he’s played in this inverted FB role when the team is going forward. I presume that’s tactical but it ruins our attacks because he overcrowds the midfield and we lose an outlet on the wing.

The inverted full back is an example of how modern football has become over-complicated. It slows down attacks which is particularly problematic against teams that drop deep. We need to be direct and quick.

There were two incidents on Wednesday when he did this: his first time lay off to Theo on a counter; and his ball down the channel to Musah.

Calabria is also a great crosser so should be out wide.

Calabria has solved our RB problem for 5 seasons, and withstood challenges from numerous FBs who were brought to unsolve a solved problem. That has been Milan’s transfer strategy for the best part of 20 seasons with one or two exceptions.

The disdain for Calabria (and Ambrosini and Montolivo before him) is the reason why Milan are no longer the club they once were. Because the thing that Milan great was that it was a family. And the success was built on that family.

The mythologising about legendary players and teams glosses over the fact that many were not ‘top players’.

      1. He’s just not as good anymore. That’s ok. It happens. Some players peak early and then lose it. Maybe he can get it back but he hasn’t played well the last season and a half.

          1. The only thing ludicrous is your innate need to constantly defend him in the eyes of random commenters of this site as apparently the “regulars” here don’t seem to take your Calabria posts seriously anymore.

Or it could just be me. Idk.

          2. His age doesn’t matter. Some guys are good for a period of time then regress. Theo might be doing the same thing. I would love to see Calabria and Theo play better but Theo hasn’t played well this year and Calabria for a couple of years.

          3. @ ACM1899

The amount of group think around is striking. If you find yourself saying the exact same thing as everyone else maybe start to question it.

People are posting these comments a few days after Calabria marked a pacey LW out of a game to the point he was taken off at half time.

It’s just people jumping on bandwagons.

      2. I’m sorry.. a great crosser???? Come on. He can’t wrap his foot around a ball and his crosses sort of float in there with hardly any power on them. Please don’t reference one cross last match. I’m talking about watching him the last 10 years. I don’t mind the rest of your arguments, but this crossing thing sort of diminishes your credibility in my opinion.

        1. He’s had a similar number of assists to Theo over the years.

Maybe his crossing stats aren’t great in FIFA but FIFA isn’t real life.

          1. I’ve watched him for a decade. He just isn’t a great crosser. A great crosser for me rips balls in that defenders really don’t want to deal with. Trippier, Trent, etc. Actually, Florenzi is an example of a great crosser as well. He’s pretty rudimentary as an attacker really. Solid player, but nothing too dynamic going forward

          2. The f u are talking? Since theo arived (19/20 season) their stats in serie A :

            Theo- 29 goals+26 assist
            Calabria- 7 goals+14 assist

            That’s similar number to you??
Calabria didn’t achieve that number since he started to play for us (15/16 season),he has 9goals+20 assist , if we include other competitions (CL + cup) the difference is even bigger
            Theo – 31g + 41 assist (5 years in team)
Calabria- 10g+ 21 assist (9 years in team)

    1. You don’t get to call the club yours with a disgraceful attitude like that.

If you don’t deem the players and therefore the club to be good enough for your high standards go support another team or find another hobby.

Its absolutely pointless claiming to support a team where you have disdain for its captain and longest serving player.

      1. There’s nothing special about Calabria. Never has been. Never will be. Very average player who through Milan’s banter era, lack of ambition and financial negligence has remained at the club as long as he has.

Your mind just cant compute it logically. Thats what bias is.

    2. The unmotivated captain. He want his salary increase from 2 million become 4 million.

Just like the unmotivated crap captain theo. He want his salary increase from 4 million become 8 million.

  4. Every player has Strengths and Weaknesses! He is above average player. He’s one of the FOUR that would die for this club. Even Rafa, despite been a top player has lots of weaknesses. Too bad we don’t treat him well. He gives his heart for the club. It’s really unfair. ❤️🖤
