Calhanoglu admits he feels an ‘enemy’ to Milan and would ‘love’ Champions League derby

By Oliver Fisher -

Hakan Calhanoglu has claimed that half of the city ‘hate’ him and admitted he wants a derby against AC Milan in the Champions League quarter-finals.

There is no love lost between Calhanoglu and the Milan fans given that he left the Rossoneri in the summer of 2021 after they did not renew his contract and decided to join city rivals Inter on a free transfer.

After being runner-up to the Nerazzurri in the Scudetto battle when he was with Milan in 2020-21, he had to watch his former team-mates celebrate the lifting of the league title last May as Stefano Pioli’s side pipped Simone Inzaghi’s men to be crowned champions.

Interviewed by La Gazzetta dello Sport, Calhanoglu spoke of his experience at Inter so far – with a renewal apparently close – and he couldn’t resist a couple of thinly veiled comments about Milan.

“Let’s put it this way: for half of the city I’m an idol and half an enemy. Half loves me and half hates me,” he said (via SempreMilan.it).

“On the same day I happened to hear Milanisti insults and Interisti chants on the street. It’s something to do with football, I won’t be the first or the last to experience a situation like this.

I have a tough character that helps me to go further. And in the end the love of the Inter fans is enough for me. Derby in the Champions League? I would love it, it would be history.”

    1. Love Carlo and I’m all up for reunion with him in UCL but not yet
Give me one of Napoli, inter or Benfica I’m the next round.
We are not ready for the rest

  1. Funny how this dude always play victim. He didn’t renew, he went to the direct city rival with basically same salary offered, directly bad-mouthing his ex team-mates, took a jibe when he scored the derby goal, and what did you expect, really? You expect a respect?

      1. Let do hope so. He might already forgot how Milan picked him from Leverkusen even though he still had that ban. We, Milanisti, always support him thru his bad phase, and even during his ‘personal’ matter. A (might be) decent player, but a shitty person for sure.

  2. Milanisti wouldn’t hate you if you didn’t mocked them first last year when you scored that pinalty at derby.

  3. We will also be happy to meet Inter if we make it to the next round. Not a big deal to humiliate them (and Napoli) when our squad is complete.

  4. The way Porto played against Inter, seems like they’ll be definitely scoring against them.. Inter played a really boring game, Porto was playing better and they almost scored on a few occasions. So I guess it’ll be hard for them to get out of this fixture.. so he should wait first till the match ends. Maybe they won’t last in the competition, nobody knows..

Apart from this, this guy doesn’t really know how to talk to the media, he sucks at this. This is not out of hate I’m saying.. I really sensed it when was bragging on his ex teammates

  5. Lol. This guy has a peanut for a brain. “Derby in the Champions League? I would love it, it would be history.” -I guess he doesn’t know Inter and Milan have already met in the CL knockouts in both the quarters and semis, and we won both times.
