Capello questions Milan’s midfield regression since Scudetto: “Don’t destroy it”

Since winning the Scudetto, AC Milan as a team have regressed, that much is clear to see. However, the reasoning for this is slightly unclear. Today, Fabio Capello suggested it could be to do with the changes in the midfield.

When Milan won the Scudetto, they did so with a fantastic midfield. One which covered all bases, and looked comfortable doing so. The same cannot be said for the midfield at present, or even in recent times.

Even after the summer mercato, there can still be questions asked about the Rossoneri’s midfield trio, and it could be suggested that there is a general lack of balance – which was an area of weakness last season.

It seems that the problem is reoccurring once more, and with Ismael Bennacer injured, it could already be suggested that there is a lack of suitable depth. Perhaps, this issue existed before his injury.

Speaking this morning to Gazzetta dello Sport, Capello questioned the Diavolo’s midfield situation, and Milan’s poor decisions after the Scudetto win.

“There isn’t one of Milan who won the Scudetto from that midfield. If you won, you have to improve the base, don’t destroy it. In recent years, half-points have arrived, half-attacking… And where is the director? But the problem concerns many roles. Like the center forward. Giroud is an area 9, Morata is another thing… Morata is not an area 9. Such a tactical turnaround must be studied by the company and coach.”

  1. When they sell a generational talent like Tonali, who also happen to be a fan of the club as well, you should know very well that this club has no desire for football success.
They could have had the next Messi and Ronaldo on the wings and they would have still sold them and destroyed the team, cause again their objective is not winning Scudettos. They are here for other reasons that got nothing to do with football. That’s vulture capitalism for you.

    1. Did you just compare Tonali with Messi and Ronaldo?
      Generational talent? Calm down.
Why haven’t they sold Theo, Leao, and Maignan if, as you claim, they would have sold the next Messi and Ronaldo if they were Milan players?
Hasn’t Leao been dubbed the next Ronaldo? And yet they haven’t sold him. Interesting.
With everything we found out about the “generational talent” Tonali since he has left Milan, when are some people going to start thinking that Tonali was the one that asked to be sold and run away from his problems than the other way around?
Milan has tried to sell many players over the last couple years, some refused to leave and are still here, but the Milan fan Tonali accepted to be sold in an instance.

        1. Adli refused to leave for 2 years. Jovic refused to leave. Bennacer either refused to leave or no one wanted him. Bakayoko refused to leave, etc.
How come they weren’t forced against their will to leave the club as some want to make it seem that Tonali was? Maybe because Tonali was the one that wanted to leave.
The fact IS that in 6 years of Elliott/RedBird, only 1 player was sold supposedly to ” cash in”, even though we still have some writing narratives how this ownership only look to buy players so they can cash in on them and not to win.
One player, Tonali, who happened to be a self proclaimed degenerate gambler. Well, he had to become self proclaimed and turn himself in after the other players he coerced to gamble ratted him out.
Don’t need to make stuff up.

          1. And yet all your stuff is made up.

None of your examples are similar to a situation where the management received a real offer of 70M€ right under their red nose. You still don’t understand how they work. You don’t (want to?) remember Tonali’s face when he arrived in England or when he said during the visit that Milan has a better gym.

Like usual, it’s everybody’s fault but the management. We know the tune but keep going, it’s entertaining and we don’t have much to laugh about these days.

      1. Well if you just make stuff up you can add that Tonali also celebrated and was yelling that he is so glad that he left Milan, plus he thanked you personally for the moral support you give to Red Bird lol.
The reality however is that Tonali never hide that he is a Milan fan, he refused Juve and Inter to join Milan. He even took a salary pay cut to join Milan. He was crying when he was leaving Milan and his agent said he needed convincing to go to Newcastle. Now all of those are facts. And not spin offs like claiming that Origi and Balo dont want to leave cause they love the club lol. They are staying cause they get free money from the club that they would not get anywhere else. Thats opposite of doing it for the love of the club.
As for Leao and Theo, the offers never came. Milan current chairman Scaroni said that he will pack Leao bags himself. If that is not clear enough for you where they stand on selling stars then nothing will be and you are just dishonest.

      1. Indeed.
Capello is right; you don’t dismantle the midfield core, you invest and strengthen. Unfortunately the Milan ownership were not for keeping Kessie and paying him what he deserved. Tonali left because he thought he was unsellable and found out otherwise, as other players did, who have found success elsewhere.
Milan seem very much like a chicken with no head at the moment.
Hope it’s not too embarrassing on Sunday

  2. Milan couldn’t have Kessie because he’s a scummy mercenary who gave up actual footballing success for money. He’s never repeated his form as a squad player for Barca and is now in the Saudi retirement league at 27 years old when he should be at his prime.

    His lost.

Tonali however was an own goal, and we lost money on his sale given the number of players we signed not to replace him.

Also Krunic was a big, unnecessary loss.

      1. Krunic was arguably our best midfielder.

His reading of the game and ability to control the tempo and free others was superb.

The minute he was frozen out our midfield collapsed.

Recall how we started last season really well with him in the holding position and then he was frozen out and we have had no midfield since.

        1. “The minute he was frozen out our midfield collapsed.”
No buddy, the midfield was already exposed and collapsed way before Krunic was frozen.
The truth is, Kessié was our best midfielder by a landslide, and to this day we failed to replace him.

    1. At the time I was mad at Kessié, especially because he said that after the Olympics he would extend and it didn’t happen. But he played until the end of the season like a true professional. I guess both Maldini and Kessié were upset to find out that the salary cap wouldn’t allow to pay the right price for a world class midfielder and a paramount player for the team. It’s such a joke to have the same salary cap since 2018…

    2. God forbid we pay a player what their performances merit… Kessie was the rock in that midfield. Not Tonali, and certainly not Bennacer.

How’s that salary cap going for us now?
