MN: Captain’s armband will officially change hands after Romangoli’s exit – the choices

By Oliver Fisher -

AC Milan will formally appoint a new captain given that Alessio Romagnoli is set to officially depart the club at the end of the month.

MilanNews confirms that the farewell of Romagnoli – whose contract at Milan expires soon with no sign of a renewal – is increasingly probable. In addition to leaving a void in the defensive department that must be filled with a new signing, he will also bequeath the captain’s armband that he has had for four seasons.

His time at Milan ended in the best possible way as he hoisted the Scudetto trophy into the air after the 3-0 win over Sassuolo to clinch a 19th league title, but after seven years with the Rossoneri that looks set to be his last memory on the field.

The captaincy should now pass to Davide Calabria who has already had that role on several occasions during the last season, and he is an obvious choice given he made his debut eight years ago and came through the youth academy.

The vice captain will be Theo Hernandez as he too, over the last few months, has already had the honour of wearing the armband.

  1. Davide has been on the team for a long time and he certainly deserves the captain’s armband. But my first choice would still be Kjaer !

    1. It’s a good choice, but we need a captain that played every match. Kjaer will be 4th choice after tomori, botman/bremer, kalulu

  2. Davide and Theo deserve it as 3rd option should be Sandro and 4rth Mike who is a true leader and had captained occasionally Lille too or Fikayo who is the best English CB atm

  3. unless there is something written in stone I think it should rotate, really makes little difference on the pitch who it is, forget protocol, and this in the year of the Scudetto. let it be passed from one player to the next as all are deserving and all have been leaders or MOTM at somepoint in the past year. As an example, against Lazio, have Sandro be captain ,that was the last minute goal that. imo, was the goal that decided the Scudetto, not only on paper but emotionally for the team.

    1. This is not the NFL my guy , where symbolically they have different captains every game.
The captain should be someone that
is a leader and someone the rest of the players respect, will listen and follow. U don’t pick a captain because someone scored a goal one game.
BTW every goal is important but if we gotta pick one that is most important, it would be Giroud goal in the derby. That goal changed the season for both Milan and Inter.
Zlatan has scored alot of important goals but he has never been a captain in any of his clubs. There is a reason for that, some teammates tolerate him ,others can’t stand him
Davide should continue to be the captain.

      1. I agree with you, captaincy here is pretty sacred, especially if the eternal il capitano is your director.
Although, i do think sandro is much more suited for captain thn calabria, the thing is, all of our iconic captain has this auras and grit that even a prime gattuso would comply, i saw that from sandro (that theo-dumfries spat), davide is a bit too docile dont you think?

        1. Sandro is the long term captain, but I don’t think he is ready to lead or even more I don’t think any of his teammates are ready to follow him yet.
And acting like Gattuso shouldn’t be a factor in captaincy. If you remember once Maldini retired, Milan gave the armband to Ambrosini not Gattuso( who I loved as a player but he was a nut job and not a leader material)

      2. I understand that it is not the NFL, so go ahead an appoint Calabria captain…….now lets say he does not make the lineup and a good chance of that…..like Romangoli he was the Captain and they passed the torch to Davide…..sorry last year it was passed around alot for being so symbolic. I understand your sentiment but the Rossoneri are not the good ol’ boys traditional team like lets say Juve or Lazio, they are the youngest team in Serie A and represent the new way of team identity… BUT I can go with tradition, if so it will be Tonali since he has his position written in stone, but with tradition Theo is not Italian which might be an issue. Regardless Forza Milano
