Cardinale rules out Super League for Milan: “Not right for European football”

By Isak Möller -

The European Super League proposal has certainly not caught on since the official plans for the tournament were presented. In a recent interview, AC Milan owner Gerry Cardinale confirmed that they will not be a part of it.

In December last year, the company behind the European Super League presented the format for the competition and although it caught some attention, it never took off from there. Around the same time, Sport reported that any of the original members clubs could be fined up to €300m for dropping out.

In an interview with Calcio e Finanza, which was published earlier today, Gerry Cardinale didn’t seem too bothered about the threat of a fine. He stated that Milan – even though they were originally part of the Super League – are focused on working with UEFA.

“I believe that we should operate within the framework of UEFA and the ECA (the European Club Association), which best serve the interests of football in Europe. The Super League, whatever its current form, is not something we think is right for Milan, Serie A or European football,” he stated.

Cardinale also admitted that he could sell a minority stake in the club as there is great interest in the Middle East, but he will not give up full control. It’s certainly right not to focus on the Super League, as Milan and Cardinale have far more important stuff on he agenda.

  1. I know they want in. All invited Italian clubs want in. Italy is inferior to other leagues in terms of commercial revenue and this money league would give them a lot of money just to participate. But considering the consequences such as exclusion from domestic league and European championship, it’s not feasible. And I’m glad it’s not. So let’s forget about it and move on with the settled plan.

  2. It’s a zombie league and always has been. Who wants a tournament that consists only of Real Madrid and Barcelona- nothing could be more boring. Super-stupid….
