Samu Castillejo has pledged his support to AC Milan boss Stefano Pioli, insisting he hopes he stays on as head coach for next season.
While football is at the back of everybody’s minds right now – especially in Italy – the major media outlets have still been finding a way to speak to players, most of whom are on lockdown in their own homes with a personalised training regime.
The death toll from the COVID-19 virus continued to rise on Sunday, as Italy announced that 651 more people have died, bringing its total to 5,476 – an increase of 13.5 percent but down from Saturday’s figure of 793.
It is an emergency unprecedented in the current generation, and Castillejo spoke to the microphones of Sky Italia to reveal his thoughts on the current crisis.
The Spaniard began by revealing that while he has stayed in Italy, his family are back home in Spain, so as not to endanger them.
“I stayed here to not endanger my family. The situation here was not easy and therefore I stayed here,” he said (via MilanNews).
“My family is fine, they are at home. They are worried about me being here alone. We hope everything will pass quickly and see my family again as soon as possible.”
On Paolo and Daniel Maldini, who have both tested positive, he added: “There was concern for their health. We hope that no other colleague is positive. Yesterday I spoke to Daniel, he told me that he has no symptoms so we hope everything will be fine.
“I want to see San Siro full again, I want to feel the affection of the fans”.
Meanwhile, speculation is rife in the media suggesting that Ralf Rangnick could replace Stefano Pioli as head coach, but the former Villarreal winger would rather that didn’t happen.
“A player must always be ready and be strong in the head when there are moments of difficulty. This is the most important thing. Pioli is a great coach, we hope he will remain next year too.”
