Celtic boss Lennon opens up on ‘disappointing’ rumours of Milan interest in defender

By Oliver Fisher -

Celtic boss Neil Lennon has attempted to cool speculation that Kristoffer Ajer could be set for a move to AC Milan.

It is no secret that the Rossoneri are in the market for a new centre-back given the fact the department is currently so threadbare with Mateo Musacchio and Alessio Romagnoli out injured.

Although Fiorentina’s Nikola Milenkovic is believed to be the priority target, the reported €40m price tag could force Milan to look at other options.

On Friday, Sky Sports News’ Anthony Joseph revealed that the Rossoneri are looking at signing Ajer from Celtic in a deal worth around €16-17m.

However, their head coach Neil Lennon spoke to BBC Sportsound after Saturday’s 3-2 win over Livingston and insisted that he wants the Norwegian to stay around, expressing frustration at the timing of the rumours.

“It’s disappointing on the day of the game that this comes out, because that can be unsettling for the player, but I thought particularly second half he had a real strong game, and we don’t want to sell him. I’m not convinced £14m would cut it anyway,” he said.
