CorSport: Income and sporting pride – Champions League provides a treasure to Milan

By Oliver Fisher -

Getting into the quarter-finals of the Champions League is vital to AC Milan for a number of different reasons, a report has detailed.

Corriere dello Sport (via PianetaMilan) this morning recall how Milan were not even in the top club competition from 2014 to 2021, which weighed like a boulder on the finances of a club like Milan, but they are now back in the top eight clubs and will net €20m from getting there too.

The record revenues achieved in the San Siro leg against Tottenham are a breath of fresh air for the club’s future plans and they provide an injection of cash which will help tackle some of the objectives on the agenda.

The first is the renewal of Rafael Leao who wants to stay at Milan, but the obstacle to be overcome is the fine owed to Sporting CP. The commissions owed to his agents is also an issue to be resolved, and at the moment the negotiation seems very far from its conclusion.

Losing Leao on a free would mean throwing away the chance to raise money from his sale, and the Champions League could turn out to be a showcase capable of attracting the attention of the best clubs in the world.

In all of this we must not forget the renewal of a player like Olivier Giroud, but for him the distance between offer and demand seems minimal, plus the permanent signing of Brahim Diaz over whom a negotiation with Real Madrid is needed.
