Express: Chelsea still want Milan star with pre-contract eyed – the situation

Chelsea have not given up on signing goalkeeper Mike Maignan from Chelsea, a report claims, and they are preparing another move.

To simplify the back story a bit, Chelsea came in for Maignan in early June during the special pre-Club World Cup window. The goalkeeper was believed to be keen on the move, but they never agreed a fee with Milan.

The Frenchman remained and the new head coach Massimiliano Allegri made him club captain. However, his contract expires at the end of the season and there is nothing suggesting a renewal is imminent.

Chelsea still interested

According to the Daily Express, Chelsea still have big doubts about their starting goalkeeper position having not addressed the issue during the summer window, and they still hold an interest in Maignan.

Robert Sanchez’s performance against Manchester United seems to have forced further reflections as he got a straight red card early on for a reckless challenge which ended up being a big factor in their defeat.

The paper confirms that the London club wanted the 30-year-old in June, but Milan were asking for £25m (not far off €30m) in order to sell, which was a figure deemed too high. This time, Maignan can sign a pre-contract agreement in January, which is what Chelsea might just pursue.

  1. Chelsea are such a pathetic team… overspend on everyone but sour against us since we can actually use players and not play FM

Pulisic, Tomori, Nkunku will have more titles than Enzo, Colwill, Palmer…

  2. For Chelsea, it seemed daft that they wouldn’t spend 25-30M on Maignan, he would have been a bargain for them and surely helped get an extra few wins over the season.

And he’ll probably go there next summer on a free. But we’ve got a year where he has to perform and to scout a replacement for next summer. No excuse for the club if they mess up that one.

    1. Yes but you don’t know who will make an offer for him. Chelsea had to chance to get him now they have to compete with others. It is like Guehi for Liverpool, he didn’t join (because of Crystal Palace not being able to sign a replacement that quick, not the same situation) and now he is 99% going to Madrid for free, not Liverpool. With their spending, it was really stupid not to give 25M and risk not even getting him in the end.

  3. If Maignan doesnt sign an extension or gets sold in January then bench him and play Torriani and Terraciano the rest of the season. An example has to be set or other clubs will keep stealing our players for free.

  4. I would’ve cashed in on him and brought in Savic – I think he was only about 14mil – mainly because it was clear Mike didn’t want to stay. Anyone who doesn’t want to be here is welcome to leave imo…

  5. I don’t blame Mike if he chooses to move on because we had dull person negotiating the renewal. But If Mike signs a pre-contract, there’s no need playing him anymore, just bring in Torriani.
