Chiellini answers the question: “Can AC Milan defend their title this year?”

By Oliver Fisher -

Former Juventus defender Giorgio Chiellini believes that AC Milan are continuing to grow even after their title win, while they have three players that are on ‘another level’.

Milan upset the apple cart in many ways last season as they beat their city rivals Inter to the Scudetto, winning each of their last six games to capitalise on the Nerazzurri’s slip-up in their game in hand versus Bologna.

The Rossoneri also conceded just two goals in their final 11 league games with nine of those being clean sheets showing that they had developed a defensive resilience that was good enough to challenge the best in Europe.

Now the question is about whether Milan can back up that achievement by doing even better in the 2022-23 campaign, and if you have a gut feeling about how the season will play out then a sports betting website will allow you to have a flutter.

Chiellini spoke on Sky Italia about Milan’s start to the season and the idea of maintaining the right mentality even after tasting a success as sweet as the Scudetto win, with his comments relayed by our colleagues at SempreMilan.it.

“After you win a title there are two options: either you have a full stomach and start badly or keep getting better. Milan are continuing to grow,” he said.

“They have three players on another level, in Leao, Theo and Maignan. Then there are others who are growing as much as Kalulu, Tomori and Tonali.”

The Rossoneri face a challenging upcoming season because the pressure will be on Stefano Pioli’s men to try and defend their league title like city rivals Inter failed to do last season while also going further in the Champions League and possibly targeting the Coppa Italia too.

They have certainly started strongly in the league having continued their unbeaten streak from the last season with three wins and two draws. The most notable result was the last one too as Milan beat their city rivals Inter 3-2 in a thrilling derby at San Siro.

However, no side is ever truly perfect and Milan still have some work to do. They are yet to win on their travels so far this season with only draws against Atalanta, Sassuolo and Red Bull Salzburg (in the Champions League) last night to show.

Nonetheless, Saturday’s trip to a struggling Sampdoria side provides another chance to get three points on the board and keep up the strong momentum.
