Chiffi appointed as the referee for Milan-Empoli – the precedents for both sides

By Oliver Fisher -

The AIA have selected Daniele Chiffi as referee for Saturday’s match at San Siro between Milan and Empoli, it has now been confirmed.

Daniele Chiffi will be the referee appointed to officiate the match between the Rossoneri and their opponents from Tuscany, which sees Stefano Pioli’s side enter a crucial last 10 games as they hope to keep up their title push. To assists him will be linesmen Imperiale and Di Iorio, while the fourth official will be Volpi and the VAR chiefs Nasca and Lo Cicero.

Chiffi has refereed 6 Milan games, with the Rossoneri winning 4, plus one draw and one defeat which came in the surprising 2-0 loss to Spezia in February 2021. There have also been 4 penalties awarded by the 37-year-old in matches involving Milan, with 10 yellow cards and no reds.

He had to step in and calm things down during the game between Milan and Lazio earlier in the season in the league when, after a 2-0 home win, Maurizio Sarri got into a heated confrontation with Alexis Saelemaekers.

Empoli have 3 wins from the 8 games that Chiffi took charge of and the most recent precedent was the 2-0 defeat for Andreazzoli’s men against Inter by a score of 2-0 earlier this season. There have been 16 yellow cards in those eight games plus one red.

In his previous games involving Empoli, Chiffi has never given a penalty neither for nor against. Chiffi made his Serie A debut in 2014 and since then he has directed 67 matches in the Italian top flight, in addition to 11 in the Coppa Italia and 2 internationals.
