Chivu opposes Allegri and Corto Muso style during press conference: “The days when best defences win”

This season, AC Milan have played a very Allegrian defensive game, as was expected. However, not everyone is too keen on it.

Massimiliano Allegri’s football is not for everyone. In fact, it is not even for some Milan fans, who have questioned his long-term position at the football club. However, it seems that he is just trying to get the team over the line.

This first season was probably never going to be brilliant or beautiful. Yet, he has competed for the Scudetto for large parts of the year but succumbed to injuries and the poor quality of his squad depth.

Chivu dislikes the defensive style

Speaking during his press conference today, Cristian Chivu opposed the ‘defensive style’ of play and whilst Allegri was not mentioned, his comments were certainly directed towards his city rival as MilanNews relays.

“Goals are scored and conceded especially when you have a proactive attitude. It also depends on the team you’re facing. I think the most important thing is to be proactive; it would be a shame not to exploit the individual quality of the players.

“I think the days when the best defenses win championships are over.

“Football is more dynamic and more intense. We can still improve; the other night Bayern-Real finished 4-3. Football is increasingly becoming more and more dependent on offensive transitions; we need to adapt.”

In fairness, it helps when you spend significantly more on your team’s wages than your rivals do. If Allegri’s football is limited still next season, after investment in the mercato and wage bill, it is a different question.

Whilst his depth is limited, though, his football, understandably, will be.

  1. In an investigation by the Milan Public Prosecutor’s Office, Gianluca Rocchi is accused of sporting fraud for having selected referees favored by Inter Milan for certain matches.
