Chukwueze denied two goals against Sassuolo by marginal offside calls – photos

By Oliver Fisher -

Samuel Chukwueze had the ball in the net twice during AC Milan’s 3-3 draw against Sassuolo this afternoon, and the semi-automatic offside has raised some doubts.

Milan thought they had made it 2-1 in the first half when a cross from the left side was headed back across goal and into the far corner by Chukwueze, though the offside flag went up and though the call was marginal it was confirmed by VAR.

The replay suggests that the winger was called offside because he was leaning slightly beyond the last man with his shoulder, though it is quite difficult to tell from the angle.

Chukwueze had the ball in the net again in the second half, and this time it was with an outstanding outside of the boot shot that rattled in off the far post after his run in behind was found.

Again offside came to the rescue of Sassuolo as VAR chalked it off, and this time it is very difficult to see what they saw in the booth even if the semi-automatic system should ensure the right decision is always reached.

In the end Luka Jovic and Noah Okafor would score to earn the Rossoneri a 3-3 draw, but the stats and moments like the above show just how close they were to a famous comeback win.

  1. Offside has become a parody of its intended purpose, which was to stop ‘goal hanging’, not to rule goals out because of a 1mm lean of a shoulder. I know the decision has to be binary, but it feels like a mockery seeing goals ruled out across the continent every week because of something that should not matter at all.

  2. Based on the pic above it wasn’t an offside as Chuku wouldn’t have been allowed to score with his outer part of his shoulder/arm. Just look at pic and say the line isn’t on a “forbidden part” of his body.

  3. Enzo! Correct your statement on referee of series a corruption. Howard Webb and others? He was at the off side before the ball was lifted, and later left.

  4. I can understand the first one. Particularly with the way he was returning from and offside position. It looked more offside to the naked eye and was flagged by the on field team.

The second one is absurd! You cannot even see a part of Chuk in front of the Sassuolo player. they are perfectly in line with each other.

VAR is excelling at stripping the game of many beautiful goals for the most marginal indiscretions.
And replacing those goals with extremely marginal penalties for miniscule handball calls on defenders.
It’s lose lose for the game as a spectacle.

  5. Bro wtf is this sh!t!!! Smh 🤦‍♂️
I must have missed this during the game. What in the actual fck is this sh;t!
