CIES: Milan lead Europe in players used – the staggering numbers

By Oliver Fisher -

AC Milan lead Europe in a particular statistic, a report has revealed, but it is not necessarily one that you would want to be a leader in.

As the CIES Football Observatory states, no other team in the ‘top five’ European leagues has used more players than Milan up to this point in the season.

In total, the Rossoneri have played 32 different players which is ahead of four teams who are joint-second on 30: Newcastle, Granada, Real Betis and Sevilla.

Obviously this is largely conditions by the sheer amount of injuries that Milan have had to key players, and thus the necessity to call upon the Primavera for reinforcements.

For example, Pioli has handed a senior debut to Alex Jimenez, Kevin Zeroli, Chaka Traore, Jan-Carlo Simic, Davide Bartesaghi and Francesco Camarda already this season.

Below is the list of all the different players used by Pioli:

Goalkeepers: Maignan, Sportiello, Mirante.

Defenders: Tomori, Thiaw, Calabria, Theo Hernandez, Kjaer, Florenzi, Kalulu, Bartesaghi, Simic, Jimenez, Pellegrino.

Midfielders: Loftus-Cheek, Reijnders, Bennacer, Musah, Krunic, Adli, Pobega, Terracciano, Zeroli.

Forwards: Giroud, Leao, Pulisic, Chukwueze, Jovic, Okafor, Romero, Chaka Traorè, Camarda.

The sheer amount of players used by Milan is perhaps something that Pioli could use in his defence after tough patches of form.

  1. Most teams if you change a few important players it massively effects how the team plays.
With this Milan that hasn’t been the case, why?
You could argue it is because they all understand the system OR it is because there is no system….and therefore it makes no difference

Milan squad is becoming a bloated mess of mediocre players

    1. I’d give Pioli the credit here. To not have the same players all the time and still be up there on the table. On the other hand I’ll also criticize him for the injury debacle too

      1. We don’t exactly know what the injuries are attributed to. And as you may (or may not) remember, we’ve had a sh*t ton of injuries during the banter era as well. So this has been a problem long before Pioli got here.

      2. Correct. He wants his players to do certain things on the pitch while not prepare them to do those things off the pitch. The result is injuries one after another.

    2. You guys wont give Pioli any credit even if he does something good, its like he is somehow evil in your eyes and someone inexperienced like Motta can come in and do immediately better

Motta btw hasnt won in 4 games but at Milan he’ll win 5 titles in a row right?
