CM: Adli and the lack of playing time – Pioli considers him a one-position man

By Isak Möller -

Yacine Adli has struggled to get playing time for AC Milan thus far this season and the main issue seems to be his position on the pitch. Or at least it was initially, as Stefano Pioli now has a clear idea of where he can play.

The former Bordeaux man was signed by the Rossoneri last summer but was left on loan for one year. He took his first steps at Milanello this summer, therefore, and he has been working with the team ever since.

However, despite being available, he hasn’t played much for Milan thus far. As highlighted by Calciomercato.com, he has only played 46 minutes for the Rossoneri and that isn’t what many fans expected, given the excitement surrounding his arrival.

The main issue has seemingly been his position, but Pioli has now more or less made it clear where he can play: only as No.10. Before the game against Bologna, the manager stated that he doesn’t see Adli in the midfield tandem.

After that game, he elaborated further and stated that he doesn’t think Adli can play on the sides either. Finally, during the press conference yesterday, he revealed that he hasn’t tried the Frenchman as a mezz’ala either (three-man midfield).

The trequartista role is the only one left, in other words, and he will have to fight with Brahim Diaz and Charles De Ketelaere for a spot.

  1. I agree with Pioli. He is a one-position man. CAM.

But of course, if there is an injury crisis he can play out left and as a deep-lying playmaker.

  2. I don’t understand the matter with Aldi why he is not featuring for Milan. He is definitely better than Diaz and from pre season, i saw he got fighting spirit and is technically gifted player. It would be great to put De Ketelaere as striker and Aldi behind him for samp game

      1. His idea makes sense. Brahim played as winger when Hakan was there. CDK played as CF with Noa Lang (CF/LW, similar to Leao) as his partner.

  3. 1. If Pioli use Adli as double pivot then that means one of Bennacer or Tonali needs to sit on the bench. But there’s the headache when the fans complain and ask “Why Pioli didn’t play Bennacer or Tonali?!”.

There’s also Pobega who needs to play and he’s an Italian that many fans keeps asking “Milan should add more Italian players because Milan is an Italian club”. But now somehow some of these fans wants Milan to sell him just because he’s not yet adapt with the system 🤣

And the new addition Vranckx. If Adli should play as double pivot then when Vranckx got his chance???

    2. If Pioli put Adli at three mans midfield that means Pioli needs to make a radical changes aka abandon 4-2-3-1 formation and double pivot system that already been build for 3 years.

A big system change is not easy to do and quite risky because it means Milan will be back to zero of how they play and it could affect other players.

Example like Leao. His best potential is to play as left winger to maximized his speed and dribble. Pioli already tried him as CF but he doesn’t fit with that role. Now if Pioli change into 4-3-1-2 then Leao gonna sit back at the bench and that would be a big of waste.

    3. The current best option to play Adli is as trequartista. But in this position there’s CDK, Diaz, and Krunic although Krunic probably will be used more as for DMF.

It’s not easy to implement new players and that’s why everyone needs to be patience. Adli will get his chance.

  4. This is same problem with Carlo Ancelotti before. And because Milan lack of good player in right wing, why not choosing the same patron 4-3-2-1 Christmast tree formation just like Don Carlo before?

  5. It was pretty obvious CDK will take the first spot in the pecking order when he came. Pioli likes Diaz, idk why but he does. Pioli also likes Krunic so Adli has a lot of work to get any minutes, Pobega also works best as cam not holding mid… Lot of work for Pioli this season. And without the stability of Kessie, we’re already getting much more goals than we used to ‘cuz there isnt anybody to do the dirty work Franky did

  6. Every player that chose to represent Algeria or Morocco instead of their respective European countries has been sidelined. Hachim comes to mind, as soon as he decided on Morocco instead of Italy he suddenly became a mediocre player. Now Adli was great until he chose Algeria. Looks like they are being published.

  7. He is one of the players that has a great display in pre seasons games.
Why Pioli didn’t give him a start in one of the season games.
