CM: ‘After or together’ – how Milan plan to move forward with Maignan’s renewal

AC Milan have two notable renewals to sort in the next 12 months, those of Theo Hernandez and Mike Maignan. Given the complexities of the Theo deal, the goalkeeper may have to wait for negotiations to finalise, but things are moving in the right direction.

The summer mercato was massive for Milan. Not only did they bring in a new manager, but they also remoulded the squad somewhat. It can be argued, though, that the biggest win so-to-speak was the retentions of their stars.

Interest in big players will always exist, and it is no shock that interest in Rafael Leao, Hernandez and Maignan exists. However, all three remained in Rossoneri colours this summer. Leao’s deal was extended recently, so there are no fears there, but for Theo and Maignan, renewals must be looked at.

Theo’s deal is particularly difficult, and after this weekend’s issues, some may have doubted what the path forward looks like. Nevertheless, there are no issues, and talks will resume in the next few weeks.

The other player of interest is Maignan, and according to a report from Calciomercato.com, the goalkeeper’s deal will be discussed ‘after, or together [with Theo’s]’. Contact in the past few months has been very constructive, and there is ‘a desire to reach an agreement’.

In terms of figures, Maignan is requesting a similar figure to his compatriot – €8 million – but Milan see €6m as an ideal, albeit including bonuses.

An important few weeks await the Diavolo, and the management must get their decisions spot on.
