CM: Brace against Man City, back to Italy – Colombo will leave but Milan insert buy-back

By Oliver Fisher -

Lorenzo Colombo scored twice against Manchester City just a few days ago, but now he is on his way back to Italy and will sign for Empoli.

As Calciomercato.com write, the two goals against City in the New York friendly were the best way to say goodbye to Milan. He has left the training camp and has returned to Italy because the Rossoneri have an agreement with Empoli.

The 22-year-old centre-forward is preparing for a new adventure away from Milan after the loan spells at Lecce and Monza in the past two seasons, and it will now be the Tuscan club who will hopefully give him consistent starts and allow him to properly establish himself as a Serie A level striker.

Colombo has left the USA where he was training under the orders of Paulo Fonseca for the upcoming commitments against Real Madrid and Barcelona in the Soccer Champions Tour. Now, he will work under Roberto D’Aversa.

Milan and Empoli have reached an agreement for Colombo on the basis of a loan until the end of the season, with an option to buy in favour of Empoli and a buy-back in favour of Milan, with whom Colombo has a contract until June 2028.

  1. Surely you make that decision after the tour. 2 well taken goals against a world class keeper in Ederson. What if he bags some more in the remaining fixtures. We are looking for another striker…we may already have him

    1. Milan don’t believe in him. Two loan spells. Both very forgettable. A brace against city isn’t enough to change that opinion. He has to impress during his loan spells.

      1. Borriello was the same though, Loan after Loan and in the end put in a good season for us, perhaps if we’d given Borriello more chances then Hed have developed quicker and been a better player for us. I’d evaluate him after the tour and then make a call….just my thoughts

          1. So don’t have massive squads.

Both Cristante and Locatelli were buried behind two players and were forced to leave.

Cristante was buried behind Montolivo and the club just had to sign Essien just after he’d scored his first senior goal.

Locatelli was buried behind Montolivo and the club just had to sign Biglia just after he’d begun to establish himself in the first team.

Cutrone forced the club to keep him after a successful pre-season and then he managed to outscore Kalinic and Silva who were 2/14 signings we made that summer.

In response they threw Higuain at him and when Cutrone outperformed him and then threw Piatek at him which finally killed him off.

Serie A clubs, and Milan especially, do everything they can to undermine youth players.

Had any youth player made the mistakes that Tomori or Thiaw or Adli or Musah or even Giroud had made (missing 1v1s and giving the ball away in his own third) they’d be banned from the club.

      2. Loan spells rarely work out.

Gabbia is the only player who broken into the first team after going on loan in about 10 years.

And that was by accident because we had an injury crisis.

And then when he did come back and impressed we decided to bring in another CB anyway.

Why don’t you question the systematic failure to develop youth players?

Are you telling me NONE of them are good enough?

    2. There is no logic or foresight in what these people do.
I guess when u have a banker in charge who never worked in football its not surprising

    3. 2 well taken goals, true. But be honest, both are easy poacher goals AND Ederson gave a horor show that match – he should have saved all those goals – all three goals are reachable. If Maignan is in his shoes he will receive many backlash from this forum.

He showed good movement and positioning, but that was against defence and midfield composed almost entirely by young players.

I am also one of the guys that want him to stay and given some chance (like my comment in the player ratings after the match), especially after Fonseca interview that he want to have a look at Colombo… but it is what it is.

      1. That second finish was good, plenty of elite strikers pull that wide or miss hit it…and Ederson is still Ederson, probably the best keeper of the last 5 years

        1. Yes, that’s good hit – but it flies toward the center of the goal where Ederson was. A truly world class GK should have saved that goal 8 times out of 10..

And about Ederson – for pure GK ability, personally I don’t rate him as top 5 GK. Being in best performing team in premier league doesn’t automatically make you the best – Barca’s Valdes was prime example of this, even though Ederson is undoubtedly better than him.

My top 5 would be Neuer, Courtois, Alisson, Maignan and Dollarumma. Oblak and Ter Stegen also better than Ederson.

          1. I agree he’s not the best at the goalkeeping bit, but I think I’d only rate Mike and Neuer over him. He’s also been consistent which is good for a keeper

      1. Yeah. That protects us and gives them incentive to give him more minutes since they have more than skin on the bone if he plays well.

      2. Buy him back for what?

Milan have signed at least 1 striker every single season for the past 15 seasons few of which have lasted more than 1 season.

This trend does not look like ending given we seem to just have to sign another 2 strikers this summer.

    4. You’re assuming he’s being given a fair go.

Being a youth player the club will do everything to get rid of him.

    5. Colombo is too slow. All he has is a strong shot. It’s obvious to those of us who actually watched him at Monza that he isn’t good enough for a team like Milan. He was totally unremarkable at U21 level for Italy as well, 4 goals in 20 games. That pretty much matches what he did at Monza. That’s his level. He has been given chances. The new crop of youth players from the Primavera and Futuro are being groomed for the first team because, unlike Colombo, they stand out at youth level.

    1. It makes absolutely no difference what they do in pre-season games, few players who play in pre-season games are still at the club at the start of the season.

The whole thing is a waste of time.

      1. U missed the point. The more he scores, the more he becomes valuable for a potential sale

And preseason is absolutely not a waste of time from a game preparation perspective. It’s how u get back into football shape from a break

  2. Colombo can be very useful for our current Milan team. This team also needs young Italian players. Send him on loan will not help him
