CM: Details emerge as Milan close in on extension for centre-back

By Ben Dixon -

After he returned in January, Matteo Gabbia proved himself to be a key player for AC Milan when required, and following his performances, the club are finalising a new contract for him, a report has suggested.

The first half of the season was poisoned by the defensive curse which saw several of the club’s central defenders sidelined in a short period of time. It seemed like January would be a mercato for reinforcements, but only one arrived, Gabbia.

Opportunities for him have been rare in the past, and whilst they have come, they have not been frequent, but when he returned, he quickly established himself as a key player in a period where rotating the defence had been the norm.

As a result of his performances, and his ability to feature in a role when required, Milan have been looking to extend his deal, and a report from Calciomercato.com has confirmed that they are ‘closing in’ on a renewal.

The report states that the Rossoneri are very happy with his growth, and reliability, and are discussing a new contract until 2028 – which gives him an additional two years on his current contract which would expire in 2026.

Furthermore, the negotiations are at an ‘advanced stage’, with Gabbia set to earn an increase on his current €1 million per year salary, and a deal could be closed by the end of June.

  1. Depth piece. Unless we go through another injury crisis I don’t think Matteo sees regular playing time. Maybe Coppa or something. But still a decent piece off the bench.

    1. Considering how he has played in the second half of this season, he could certainly be a starter IMO, and we need more Italians in our lineup anyway.

      1. Sure. The best CB we now have. Should be a starter even if his first choice for each pass is backwards. At least he can defend – unlike Thiaw & Kalulu.

    2. Considering how well he has been doing lately, it’s kind of a shame to pretty much sanction him in this fashion.
I’m not against getting another defender if we manage to get a good ST and a good DM, but aren’t we essentially sending the message to Gabbia that there is no point in him improving and playing well ?

      1. We are not sending a message to anyone – no way anyone truly at AC Milan will read this site.

I think numerically we have enough central defender – we should try Tomori-Gabbia partnership for extended period of time.

If we buy a new center defender, we need a quality one – not just one to fill a place. Ideally with left foot dominan. If not just use Simic more as 4th choice CB

    1. Im the same as you. Not sure what ppl are seeing in the pair. Don’t get me wrong they’re good, with good potential but they hype and price attached to these guys are way overboard. Scalvini got absolutely skinned by Leao when we played them, but did better otherwise. Imo it just means he’s very good against regulars and lots of room for improvement vs the best of them.

      1. Plus Scalvini just got a ligament tear. Not sure if going for a player who won’t be back before November is a good deal.

  2. They loaned him out just to waste money on Pellegrino who flopped badly at Salernitana. One of the most underrated and underappreciated defender out there. He easily pocketed all of our other defenders this season.

    Still gets overlooked and hated.

  3. Gabbia is going to challenge for starting eleven any day with what he showed after returning from loan spell. He will do well with an in form Kalulu or Thiaw because they have lots of pace and acceleration.

  4. And people forget Gabbia is still just 24, even tho he looks like he’s 34. He will never be the fastest player but he’s a solid defender and really good through the air on set pieces. And he should definitely improve with time.
