CM: Details emerge as Milan close in on extension for centre-back

After he returned in January, Matteo Gabbia proved himself to be a key player for AC Milan when required, and following his performances, the club are finalising a new contract for him, a report has suggested.

The first half of the season was poisoned by the defensive curse which saw several of the club’s central defenders sidelined in a short period of time. It seemed like January would be a mercato for reinforcements, but only one arrived, Gabbia.

Opportunities for him have been rare in the past, and whilst they have come, they have not been frequent, but when he returned, he quickly established himself as a key player in a period where rotating the defence had been the norm.

As a result of his performances, and his ability to feature in a role when required, Milan have been looking to extend his deal, and a report from Calciomercato.com has confirmed that they are ‘closing in’ on a renewal.

The report states that the Rossoneri are very happy with his growth, and reliability, and are discussing a new contract until 2028 – which gives him an additional two years on his current contract which would expire in 2026.

Furthermore, the negotiations are at an ‘advanced stage’, with Gabbia set to earn an increase on his current €1 million per year salary, and a deal could be closed by the end of June.
