CM: Genoa turn to alternative target as Milan will not sell defender

By Oliver Fisher -

Genoa have been forced to turn to other targets after learning that Simon Kjaer is not available this summer, according to reports.

According to Calciomercato.com, the Genoa management want to give Alberto Gilardino a new centre-back after his side were torn apart by a ruthless Fiorentina side in round one of their return to the top flight.

After conceding seven goals in the first two official matches of the season, between the Coppa Italia and Serie A, Genoa are running for cover and they have some names on their list.

The idea of trying for Kjaer became a hypothesis, but it seems little more than a suggestion that is difficult to implement because Milan do not want to let the Dane leave.

According to what the Ligurian edition of La Repubblica wrote this morning, the Rossoblù have targeted German Pezzella. The 32-year-old Argentine centre-back – formerly of Fiorentina and now at Betis – could be tempted by the idea of a return to Italy.

  1. Kjaer is an important presence in the locker room along with Mike. He’s not in his prime as a player, but having already lost Ibra’s influence, I think it’s important to keep Simon at least through this season to guide the new blood and the youngsters.
