CM: How Fonseca became the frontrunner for Milan as Marseille leave the race

By Oliver Fisher -

All the signs at the moment seem to point towards Paulo Fonseca becoming the next head coach of AC Milan, and there is no longer competition from Marseille to worry about as per a report.

According to the latest from Calciomercato.com, Fonseca remains ahead of everyone in the race to become the new Milan manager, which has not yet reached the finish line as we enter the final two rounds of the season.

The former Roma boss – currently at Lille in France – is among the profiles appreciated by the technical director Geoffrey Moncada, to the extent that he is actually the number one name in the eyes of the former chief scout.

Fonseca is appreciated for his proactive and attacking style of play, his propensity to work with young players and for the experience he has accumulated in recent years. He knows Serie A well too, having finished fifth and seventh with Roma in 2019-20 and 2020-21 respectively.

Olympique Marseille will not be Fonseca’s next team regardless. The Ligue 1 giants, who eliminated in the semi-finals of the Europa League by Atalanta, were also interested in hiring him but the negotiations ground to a halt.

In about 10 days, once the season is formally over, Milan are expected to be in a position where they can announce Stefano Pioli’s successor, or at least it should be very clear who it will be.

  1. “He knows Serie A well too, having finished fifth and seventh with Roma in 2019-20 and 2020-21 respectively.“

    Pathetic.

    1. Please tell me in what position was Roma supposed to finish in that period given the squad they had. People here are delusional and understand zero about football.

  2. What exactly is recommending Flopseca ? 5th and 7th with Roma, this season he is very close to miss the ucl spot with Lille, Marseille didn’t wanted him and now our director Moncada sees him as being the perfect coach for Milan! I hope this isn’t true but even Fabrizio Romano confirmed the talks with Fonseca. I never being against Mocanda I believe he is a great scouter but if this his choices for the next Milan coaches Fonseca and Luptetequi maybe he should go back to scouting. There are very good coaches like Conte, De Amorim, Concecao, Motta and we get Fonsesca… why isn’t anyone thinking about Mourinho?

    1. Complains about Fonseca finishing 5th and 7th in serie A with Roma, but asks why isn’t anyone thinking about Mourinho who finished 6th and 6th with Roma and was 9th or 10 this season before he got fired.

      1. Here we go, excuses to justify potential hiring of Fonseca.

Man I can’t wait for more, this could be a hilarious summer on this blog🍿

        1. What excuses. I don’t want Fonseca. But how are you going to bring Mourinho’s name who underachieved with the same club with much better squad. Roma has the 3rd highest payroll in the league and all he could get was 6th, 6th and 9th.

  3. It’ll be hilarious if Fonseca indeed will come. Sacking Pioli and paying his staff 10 millions combined just to get Fonseca who’s struggling to qualify CL with Lille in Ligue 1.

    Just savage from the management.

  4. How embarrassing if true. These owners have no ambition to win TITLES – only to make a PROFIT.

May as well just keep Pioli if this is our option. And why is our chief scout leading the coaching search?? How is this an improvement really??

Let me guess. Fonseca work with cheap young talent, won’t ask for a huge salary (3.5M) and wont demand any expensive transfers. Sounds familiar? LOL

TY Redbird and TY Gerry. Keep shooting for the stars!!!!!!😂😂

  5. Fonseca’s defense was carved open in his time at Roma. Defensively, this man is as good as Pioli.

Last week Conceicao was a heavy favorite. BUt what worries me here is that Fabrizio Romano was reporting that Milan were talking to Fonseca…
