CM: Juventus not the only option as Raiola holds talks with Barcelona over Milan captain

By Oliver Fisher -

AC Milan defender Alessio Romagnoli is set for a new chance to impress against Sassuolo tomorrow and could be putting himself in the shop window.

As Calciomercato.com writes, there are set to be a couple of rotations made for the game against the Neroverdi as Sandro Tonali should let Ismael Bennacer catch his breath while Romagnoli should return to the centre of the defence paired with Simon Kjaer.

Looking at the captain’s situation, it is strange to think that Romagnoli had never been questioned in his first five years at Milan but this season the tune has changed, as some performances have not been up to scratch while the arrival of Fikayo Tomori has not helped.

The seven matches remaining this season will be important to understand what the role Romagnoli will have in Milan’s plans moving forward. Among the players with contract expiring in 2022, Romagnoli is the only one who has not yet received a formal offer from Milan to renew.

Now, his agent Mino Raiola is beginning to probe the ground with other clubs, such as the swap deal involving Federico Bernardeschi discussed with Juventus – an idea Milan are cold on. Last weekend exploratory talks were staged between the well-known agent and the Barcelona management, and if Samuel Umtiti were to leave then Romagnoli could be a serious target.
