CM: Leao deployed on the left vs. Inter once again – big difference from last year

By Isak Möller -

After four league games, Milan are sitting in first place with 12 points and a goal difference of +8. The win against Inter last night was an important step, as they hadn’t won a league derby in four years.

Rafael Leao was the ‘surprise’ move by Milan in the derby, after a year, with very different results: Marco Giampaolo and Stefano Pioli had the same idea, that of deploying the Portuguese as a left-winger in the derby, as highlighted by Calciomercato.com.

The circumstances were (almost) the same: the fourth round of Serie A, Milan against Inter, Giampaolo against Conte, Pioli against Conte. The thought is right to deploy Leao, who with his speed and acceleration can be fatal for the right Nerazzurri centre-back.

However, as we all know, the results were very different. Last year, the ‘target’ was Diego Godin but the Uruguayan managed to handle the youngster, This year, on the other hand, D’Ambrosio was in big trouble in the same position.

As evidenced by the assist for Ibrahimovic’s second goal, and in general in a game of counter-attacks and fast plays, D’Ambrosio really struggled and exposed the Inter defence. In other words, a different result from last year.
