CM: Milan among admirers of Sporting CP sensation but price is rising

By Oliver Fisher -

AC Milan are looking across Europe for the player who could be their striker for the future, and the name of Viktor Gyökeres is circled in red.

Calciomercato.com recall that Gyökeres joined Sporting CP from Coventry City last summer and signed a contract until 30 June 2028, but at the moment it seems almost impossible that he will see that deal out.

Gyökeres is the man of the moment and his numbers so far this season are crazy: 30 goals and 11 assists in 33 appearances, with 17 of these coming in 21 league games as Sporting continue to fight for the title.

It took the 25-year-old striker from Stockholm a while to blossom, but in the last two years he has taken off. He has played at Brommapojkarna – a club that has one of the most interesting academies in all of Sweden – as well as Brighton, Swansea, St. Pauli and then Coventry.

In two seasons with the Sky Blues under Mark Robins he scored 40 goals with 21 coming last season, which ended with a penalty shootout defeat in the play-off final against Luton which meant they missed out on a long-awaited Premier League return.

Gyökeres moved to Sporting for €20m and is now worth at least three times as much. The competition is strong and the price, as always, is set by the market, while he has a €100m release clause in his deal too.

Half of Europe are interested in him, including Milan, but with such a high price tag it is difficult to compete with English clubs. In addition to that, Gyökeres considers England his second home and he could return there, perhaps to Chelsea who enquired in January.

It remains to be understood why no big names, excluding Sporting CP, chose to focus on him last year. There are few No.9s of a certain caliber around, especially at €20m, and the Lisbon club took a gamble that is paying off handsomely.

      1. Actually i want to keep best players in our team, but the management whatsoever can’t buy better players with tight budget without selling first.

  1. I would hope Milan would want to avoid another CDK stall and Chukwueze slow down in the mercato. Maybe Zee would be best option given he has remarkable Serie A experience already.

If he isn’t available, then back to the drawing board I guess. But I’d love to focus on him first.
