CM: Why Milan’s attempts to sign Scuffet came to nothing – the details

AC Milan found themselves in the frame to sign goalkeeper Simone Scuffet this summer in response to the serious injury that Marco Sportiello suffered, but the deal never came to fruition.

As highlighted by Calciomercato.com, the financial requests from Cagliari and the development of a young player at the club meant Milan walked away from the discussion.

Sportiello’s injury meant that Milan were left without their backup to Mike Maignan and the response was to see if an equivalent-level goalkeeper could be signed without shelling out too much money.

Cagliari’s Scuffet was identified as a potential loanee, but the Rossoblu wanted to make sure that being deprived of their goalkeeper in the short term was worth their while.

They requested €500,000 for the loan and then another €100,000 in add-ons and Milan felt that was far too high.

Another reason for Milan to walk away from the deal was that Lorenzo Torriani had a particularly impressive pre-season with the first time and proved that, were Maignan to get injured, Milan could count on Torriani for a short spell between the sticks.

As well as Torriani, Noah Raveyre and Lapo Nava are also still at the club and have impressed at their age level, so there is cover without Scuffet.

  1. Same reason as usual. They’re cheap.

Funny how they’re avert to risk when it comes to any market operation relatively costly but ok to take big risks with the roster or the new coach. If Maignan goes down Milan would play the UCL with a 16 yo kid.

    1. I don’t think that went that badly last time we played a 16-year-old kid as a gk though… What was his name again? The one captaining the Azzurri these days? Playing as the #1 in PSG? The one who is said to be one of the best in the world? Yeah. Definitely a huge mistake to see how those kids turn out if given chances. 😛

      1. Milan didn’t play in UCL at that time and was barely an outsider for top 4 in Serie A. He was also playing with Italy youth teams and was very highly regarded as a future great. He also did a lost of mistakes during his first seasons, and it’s normal.

It’s a very, very different situation. You can’t jeopardize the team’s performances just to give a chance to the kids. Milan Futuro is here for that.

        1. “You can’t jeopardize the team’s performances just to give a chance to the kids. ”

Say that to Mihajlovic and other bold coaches.

          1. Donnarumma was competing with Diego Lopez for the starting spot and Milan at this time was completely broke, with that infamous “parametro zero” policy.

Torriani played in a few meaningful friendlies, he’s not even called with Italy youth teams. That’s just convenient for this management not to spend any money. You want to see all the decisions from them under the prism of football but you forget that Milan is owned by a long term investment management fund and that the first parameter is money. And if you don’t want to see that, with all the interviews from Jerry, that tight salary cap that never evolved since 2018 or the focus on the US fans, that’s just denial.
