CM: Milan close to appointing Fonseca as Pioli’s successor – the details

By Ben Dixon -

After saying their goodbyes to Stefano Pioli this weekend, AC Milan will now aim to appoint their next manager as soon as possible, and a report has suggested that a deal could be done shortly.

This weekend’s game was emotional, a chance to say thank you and farewell to Simon Kjaer, Olivier Giroud and Pioli, celebrating their moments in the Rossoneri. However, Milan cannot wait, especially with the summer mercato opening shortly.

Although they have held an extensive evaluation process of their options, it seems that one has emerged ahead of the others – Paulo Fonseca. The Portuguese manager led Lille to a fourth-place finish in Ligue 1, and his squad has been built on young foundations.

This is just one of several reasons why the club have opted for him, and now they are working to finalise the deal, as per Calciomercato.com reports. The only thing between the club and the manager is the structure of the contract.

A three-year deal will be offered, but whether this is offered directly, or by two years with an option of a third remains unseen. His contract will be worth around €3 million per season, and the signs firmly point in the way of Fonseca leading the club into the post-Pioli era.

  1. Hahahaha you showing ambition by going for a coach whose only alternative was Marseille. To all the delusional fans here supporting Redbird – will post again at the end of Mercato when you see the “ambitious” signings as well – because let’s be honest players are already lining up to be coached by Fonseca.

    1. Tell me please how many options did Conte have or De Zerbi. I wonder what the fans would have done if we signed Kompany. Now that Bayern went for him these fans probably think he is a good option lol. It’s fine though that’s how kids think they only look at what others are doing and want to do the same!

      1. Exactly so many big clubs are looking for coaches but no one is going for Conceicao or Almiron. Fabrizio reported yesterday that for DZB the next club to appoint him still needs to pay 10Million. Rather add that to the transfer budget. If Bayern goes for Kompany I mean what’s the problem with us going with Foncesca did people on this forum scout him or what?

        1. Don’t worry you will scout him in person next season then we talk again. No need to enter useless discussions since everybody here has his own opinion. Imo offering a coach 2 year deal worth 2.5 mils not really a sign of ambition but at the end who am I to criticise the calculators. Maybe theirs showing some data we never saw 😉

    2. Supporting Redbird? I highly doubt anyone here is supporting Redbird. I support AC Milan and I accept that Redbird is their owner and I cannot do **** about it. But that doesn’t mean I have to b*tch and whine in every post how f*ng awful they are.

      1. This. Plus Redbird has had only one summer transfer window to operate and they did not appoint Pioli. People think owning/managing a club is like playing Football Manager.

      2. Agree with BB . Nobody here support owner. Owner can change , but fans still support ACM . I remember in banter era many fans hate berlusconi too ( the most successful ACM owner) but still they support ACM as club. Change the owner need 2 billion euro while change coach like pioli only cost 8m euro .

    3. Man it’s pointless these people are either Redbird’s chatbots or don’t care about football. They’re saying since June 2023 “wait and see” and they’ll be able to say it until the end of time.

  2. Foncesca can’t play 4-3-3 that one is sure he will play the 4-2-3-1 so we need to invest in attacking midfield not central or defensive midfield that have been the problem were facing we need like two or three attacking midfield then you will see the new Acmilan that can beat any team let’s sign Dario, Thiago almanda,or sarmadzic

    1. No it’s not sure, Fonseca himself said he always adapts to players at his disposal and he’s open to play 433. He played 343 with Roma. It comes down to how flexible and capable he is of changing the formation successfully and not compromise. Something Pioli was not capable, as much as I’m his supporter.

  3. It looks like he’s coming. Whether we want to or not we have to support the man and give him time. If he fails tho can we all unanimously agree current management supporter’s included that the blame falls on furlani moncada d otavio and co

  4. A straight 3 years deal will be simply mad. The management surely look something beyond what we can see here on Fonseca. Exciting, or ‘exciting’, season ahead.

  5. It is just 2 years contract with option to extend 1 years. If he is bad then ACM will not activate that option . I never watch lille so i cannot judge yet . Let see the mercato this summer . According to Fabrizio romano : fonseca almost fix become head coach ACM
