CM: Registration, coach and stadium – Milan finalising U23 team project

By Oliver Fisher -

AC Milan have now entered the final stages of the process that they hope will see them able to register an U23 team in Serie A for next season.

According to Calciomercato.com, Milan want to follow the path taken by Juventus and Atalanta. The Rossoneri are completing the final steps to get a second team registered for 2024-25, with the head coach and even the stadium being evaluated.

The coach: Stefano Pioli’s collaborator and former defender Daniele Bonera is the favourite to be the head coach of the U23 side, but Ignazio Abate cannot be ruled out as an option given that he is doing so well with the Primavera.

Bonera, from the moment of his retirement in 2019, has always been part of the Rossoneri staff, first with Marco Giampaolo and then kept on by Pioli. He obtained his coaching license in 2020, which qualifies him to lead the second team.

The stadium: However, it is not yet confirmed that the Stadio Ernesto Breda stadium in Sesto San Giovanni will be used for home matches because the club are also exploring other facilities.

Pro Sesto currently have an agreement with Inter, who since the beginning of the season have had their women’s team playing at the Breda, so in short it remains too early to say the green light would come.

The advantages: Regardless of where they players, the U23 team offers different advantages, such as allowing players to grow according to the club’s thinking and mentality, or giving more time and space to young players from the youth teams to emerge and demonstrate their potential.

Furthermore, with the presence of the Under 23s, it becomes easier for a club to have an attractive project to sign promising young players of the future.

What is missing: Milan, who in recent months forwarded the formal request to the Lega Pro, will have to wait until the first week of June to understand if there will be any teams ineligible for registration in the next Lega Pro season.

Milan also have priority to register a team in Serie C should a team drop out rather than an extra team being promoted from the level below.

  1. When AC Milan introduced the womens team didn’t we buy Brescias registration rights and if so why wouldn’t that also be an option here ? Yeah I know its not necessarily the most sympathetic thing to do in the name of sports but is it an actual option here as well so we isn’t as dependant on a different clubs bad economy rather than us paying our own way into the Serie C.

  2. I’d put Pioli on u23 and hire a proper coach for the main squad. If he (pioli) does well with them he can get a renewal. for the u23 ofc
