CM: Fofana not the final move – Milan aim to give Fonseca a ‘tailor-made mercato’

AC Milan’s fourth signing of the summer will soon be made official as Youssouf Fofana is expected for a medical ahead of joining from AS Monaco, but the work is not done there.

As Calciomercato.com report, Milan have ticked the boxes that they wanted to. First a centre-forward arrived to replace Olivier Giroud (Alvaro Morata), then a much-needed centre-back joined (Strahinja Pavlovic) and a right-back more suited to Paulo Fonseca’s game (Emerson Royal), with Fofana next.

However, the headline of the report states that the Milan management already have the ‘next moves planned for a mercato tailor-made for Fonseca’. The squad needs to be thinned out first, in order to be able to include any more signings in the squad list.

Pierre Kalulu is in talks with Juventus, while there are many other candidates to leave from Marco Nasti to Yacine Adli, Ismael Bennacer to Luka Jovic and of course those not part of the project like Divock Origi and Fode Ballo-Toure.

Should these departures materialise in the next few days, a mission that is not easy but not impossible, the Rossoneri would dive back in to seize some opportunities in the last few day, with Lazar Samardzic the main target.

He is leaving Udinese and has been identified as the ‘icing on the cake’ for Milan. However, the Bianconeri need to lower their demands from €25m to €17m, bonuses included, with Atalanta now in the running.

The Morata deputy issue is up in the air, and if it were up to Fonseca he would replace Jovic with Roma’s Tammy Abraham. However, the Serbian wants to play for a spot, as he did last season.

  1. Interesting to see what else we do.

Personally I don’t think we need anything else unless we lose someone. I would rather hold on to some money and see what we need in January.

  2. Makes no difference at the moment, if they’re not Italian-trained we can’t register anyone without selling/loaning 2-3 players, so outgoings first.

  3. So still one of the best earners in Milan is… Origi 😉 Might as well bring him as 3rd striker if he gets so big salary and apparently doesn’t want to leave.

  4. If Kalulu leaves, Milan is going to have only 3 healthy and proper fullbacks, Theo, Calabria, E Royal. They have to sign a left back in these last 2 weeks.
Jimenez, Saelemakers, Terracciano are not viable options. They can’t defend.

    1. That spot is reserved for Alex Jimenez. We are covered at fullbacks. I would love for us to get Chiesa and Samardzic. Chiesa can allow Pulisic to be AM full time. Samardzic is a different type of AM and can come in to unlock the game.

      1. not only that, it gives us a great front line rotation. I hated when we had nobody on the bench that could come in and lift the team.

      2. I too would love Chiesa but there was a quote recently from Fonseca, where he said the transfer window was closed? Maybe it was taken out of context but he implied no more incoming only outgoing.

        I suppose a chiesa-saelamaekers swap isn’t really adding personnel so maybe that’s allowed 😉

  5. So they didn’t hire Conte because he would change the team but Fonseca is allowed to do so while he only has a two year contract. And Zlatan wanted Conte. This management is such a mess, Milan needs a solid manager to make the football decisions like Marotta or Giuntoli, then the bankers can bank and the scout can scout.

    1. So predictable. You really have no ability to see any kind of nuance do you? There’s a difference between a coach coming in and asking for Royal and asking for Lukaku. Conte has a history of asking for established stars, usually one of the top players in the position that come with significant price tags and salary. Fonseca has asked for players that fit a certain playing style but work within the transfer strategy that Milan management have established.

If you’re takeaway from the first two RedBird mercato is management is a mess…the mess is between your ears.

      1. Conte said to the media that he would not ask for a revolution, which is not happening at Napoli. Lukaku is another Morata. This mercato is only tailor-made for the current unambitious and affordable sporting policy. Compare our management, coach and recruits to the other European top clubs and it’s ridiculous, even more considering the club’s growing revenues every year and excellent results not long ago. We are set for a disaster like last year. I remember going to San Siro in January knowing that this team was no longer playing for the title. If it can last a bit longer this year, at least until March…

    2. Let’s give Fonseca time on the pitch.
He is the new man after all. Let’s see how his ideas transplant onto our players in the games to come.

Though I am surprised why Pioli wasn’t given a tailored mercato🤔.
      Anyway Forza Il Diavolo

  6. they didn’t hire conte simply bcos he would have lost is preseason matches agains ace lotto and guardiola and also we will with 4th in the league table.

but with Paulo regardless of where we seat on the table milan book will be green bcos he develop players well

  7. I don’t really see a need for any more players. Focus the attentions to selling and thinning out the squad and if such an opportunity arises that we can’t say no to then sure. If samardzic comes, who plays and who sits? Adli, pobega, loftus, reijnders, fofana, pulisic, musah, bennacer all fighting for limited space

  8. Bartolol with his nonsense again.
Why am i not surprised lol.
Change the team he said, as if Fonseca suddenly force Milan to play with 3 cbs

    1. Some fans have main character syndrome will put a negative spin to everything about milan.
it’s almost like they’re playing a character they think redbird will destroy milan and exploit it to make profits, and on the other hand they believe they are intelligent authentic supporters and will insult anyone who praises a signing or the management, but regardless of all of this they watch the games and celebrate the victories when the team succeeds.

      1. I know right.
Man these people must have a lot of time in their basement, eating pizza, drinking beer while trash talking the management for whatever step they take.
If they are this negative this early even before the season start, imagine what they’re gonna say once Milan lose point.

        1. Actually I don’t live in a basement, I see San Siro thrice a week and Inter flags at the windows every day with two stars painted on the walls all over the city. I understand that a lot of people here discover football and Milan, or don’t have any excitement over wins and glory, whatever suits yourself. Everybody can have his own opinion. But yeah I eat a lot of pizza it’s the best here

  9. Just not buying it with these players as much as I ain’t buying it with the management .

This season will be a struggle far more so than people think 🙈🙉🙊

    1. Really? Why is that?
      Let’s see who we lost.
Pioli? Giroud? Simic? Probably kalulu and adli?
      Look who stays.
      Leao, theo, maignan.
      And who we got?
Moratta, pavlovic, emerson royal and soon fofana.
But by your logic milan not only isn’t getting stronger, they actually weaker now?

      1. Well let’s objectively see:

Morata for Giroud is a lateral move – I expect similar production from Morata as Giroud which is max 15 goals for the season. He hasn’t scored more than that in years so we shouldn’t expect too much more. Let’s hope he stays healthy as our backup is only Jovic – who doesn’t inspire any confidence in a one striker system for me.

Fofana is a solid signing and def upgrades our mid- but it also likely means we are losing Bennacer for sure – have to balance that 35M NET transfer spend!. So I would say it’s an upgrade but losing Benny makes it not as high as if we kept both. Musah is now your one of your primary back ups in the double pivot and he has a lot of growing to do. NOW If we keep Benny – then fantastic

Emerson – lol. Hardly an upgrade overall to what we have. Yes way better offensively than Calabria – but unless he suddenly learns how to defend – he’s a huge downgrade defensively over Calabria – so it’s kind of a wash

Pavlovic is an upgrade over Kajer. But if it ALSO costs us Kalulu we suffer a bit I’m not as convinced Gabby’s will do that well in such an aggressive defensive PRESS system we are playing due to his average speed. Kalulu is a better fit for a speedy PRESS system – so I think we will regret losing Kalulu especially only for a meager loan of 3.5M?? Joke.

I give this market a 6.5/10. How wet if we can add Samardvić and keep Benny and Kalulu – then it’s a 7.5

BTW – Zirkzee just scored the game winner for ManU in the opening match today and looked good moving the ball and linking up play…LOL

  10. 100% agree we should thin the squad but for me Bennacer is untouchable. Him alongside fofana should be our double pivot starters. Sell whoever else but not him. Salaesmaker is also making a serious case to have great season. I wouldn’t trade him for Chiesa.

    1. While I agree he is a great player and will be an asset this season I would sell him tomorrow for 50M and get Goretzka for under 30M.

  11. I don’t understand why we want to sell bennercer (our only DM) . Why not pobega. We don’t even what fofana’s adaption will be.

  12. I saw Goretzka is available and thrown out of the Bayern 1st team. He would be a top player in Italy. Get him and Chiesa. Liberalli can play AMC and cover for Pulisic. We don’t need more. I like Samardzic but Liberalli is a better player.

  13. Look folks,

Even with the mercato having been successful in the sense that we got all the targets we went after, this is still a team with a new coach which will take time to come together and be fluid.

There were a lot of positives from the preseason and the team seems like it has taken well to Fonseca and his ideas. Even with the key positions having been reinforced, it will take time to gel.

Positives are that the the core from last season has spent a year together and should play better this season having adapted. The new signings will need more time to slot in.

But this project is on the right track. The quality of the team is elevated year after year, despite what the nay-sayers try to argue. Lord knows we have come a long way from the likes of Constant, Borini, Biglia and Paletta repping our colors. Arguing to the contrary is just lunacy.

Good Luck to Fonseca and this team this season. Let’s hope it’s a closer race to the Scudetto this season than the last. And for God’s sake, lets hope we win at least one Derby this season.

    FORZA MILAN ⚫️🔴 …

    1. Borini omg.
His agent was the best agent in the world, because he managed to convince clubs like milan and liverpool to sign him.

Ngl, i was skeptical towards fonseca.
But i like what i see so far.
Players seem to play with more confidence when they have clear ideas of what to do on the field.
Season hasn’t even begun but it’s nice for the team and fans to gain hope and confidence.
Imagine the pressure if milan did poorly in pre season.

    2. Zirkee wasn’t a target?

Well no surprise for this mercato, discount and bargain and endless negotiations. At least they got Fofana. Again, a new restart as you say. For the second year in a row. From a team winning a Scudetto and going to UCL semifinals to rebuild mode. Please lord make them build their fcking stadium and go

      1. wait so by your logic milan should stick with pioli who is a scudetto winner and ucl semifinalist? lmao
no wonder so many teams have enquire for pioli, he must be busy choosing which team he would choose

  14. Nah we didn’t get all of our targets lol. Stop w the BS buddy

Yes agreed – the quality was elevated by M&M who built the core of this team – finally you agree!

Anyways yes let’s be positive about this season and hope it all comes together – and – hope we keep our key players and add a few more. I also hope we have higher aspirations than: “ Let’s hope it’s a closer race to the Scudetto this season than the last. And for God’s sake, let’s hope we win at least one Derby this season.”

  15. I don’t see anything in the lost of arrivals wlthat suggests we are closer to Inter than last year.

But we have a new coach. Every time people say this and that coach haven’t won anything, I remind myself that Carletto was considered a loaer when he took over from Terim. His Juve spell was far from stellar and he built a fantastic squad. Yes, Zlatan is no Condor, those were the glory days, but doesn’t it kind of look like there re actually tactics in play when we have the ball in the final third? I know it’s preseason and the teams we best were far from the first 11’s and the results don’t matter etc, but it looks like there are some patterns of movement actually coordinated… not just give Leao the ball and try to run into space in case he doesn’t go for goal.

I’m not blown away NY the Mercado or the coach, but I am cautiously optimistic that a change of leadership and different tactics can improve results… then we’ll see.
