CM: Milan had chance to sign Man Utd midfielder on free transfer – the background

By Oliver Fisher -

AC Milan have now put the idea of signing Manchester United midfielder Nemanja Matic on the back burner after having the opportunity.

That is according to Calciomercato.com, who claim that Matic and Milan are ‘very far apart, and in all probability they will remain so’.

After several contacts in the Autumn to bring the midfielder to Italy – led by Zvone Boban – the manager’s farewell to the Rossoneri project and the intention of the Elliott group to invest in young players with smaller salaries ultimately ground everything to a halt.

Now, Milan have definitively frozen all contact on the Matic front regarding a free transfer and will not interfere in the dialogue that exists with his entourage for his renewal at United.

The Red Devils will now activate the option they have to extend the Serbia international’s deal by another year and could even agree longer terms if the 31-year-old were to reduce his salary.

Milan said no on economic grounds with his salary deemed excessive, and now they are ready to focus on other targets.
