CM: Milan reignite interest in Tottenham defender – new coach must arrive first

By Euan Burns -

AC Milan are reigniting their interest in Tottenham defender Emerson Royal but they won’t make a move until a new coach has been appointed.

As has been reported by Calciomercato.com, the Rossoneri think that Emerson could be a useful option in defence and he seems to be surplus to requirements at Tottenham which should drive down his price tag.

When Paolo Maldini and Frederic Massara were in charge of the transfers at Milan, they were very interested in Emerson and Massara actually met with his agent in 2020 and 2021 to try and get a move off of the ground.

In August 2021, he was sold by Barcelona to Tottenham and he is under contract in the Premier League until June 2026.

Whilst he has still made plenty of appearances this season under Ange Postecoglou, he is certainly not preferred at right-back to Pedro Porro and if he wants regular starts, he will have to leave.

With Milan unsure about the futures of Andrea Florenzi and Davide Calabria, Emerson could be an opportunistic purchase, but it is exactly the sort of signing that Milan cannot press ahead with until they have appointed a new coach to replace Stefano Pioli at the end of the season.

  1. Geertruida would cost the same but is miles better.. just one from a quick rb search. Took me less than a minute

    1. “Took me less than a minute”

That’s because you’re not a scout. Let the professionals do the work.

  2. Emerson Royal is playing in a manner reminiscent of Dumfries.
I think is a better option, then sell Calabria

  3. Better buy a young talent and develop him. One who can play both on the right and left. Amar Dedic, Yan Couto, Kayode etc. Radu Dragusin, who was sold by Genoa in January, can play as CB, RB and LB. Maybe Milan should have looked at him.

    1. Dragusin mentioned that he will not play for another Serie A team due to his ties to Genoa.

Then, although he maybe could play other positions (maybe also GK as Giroud did) – he is non other than a concrete center back at the height of 1.91 meters.

      1. In January his agent said he would like to join a team like Inter or Milan. Maybe he changed his mind, idk. The height is not an issue for playing RB or LB. Players of similar height can play as fast wingers. In any case, he is at Tottenham now, and Milan should look at other options for the full-back position.

  4. Sign Reuell Walters on a free (19 yo Arsenal prodigy RB who can also be emergency CB). Splurge on other positions like CF

  5. I hope we keep Calabria (who’ll be fine with a CDM in front of him), and start to bring in Terracciano.

Calabria isn’t getting a move to a PSG or a Man City, so the only way he’s getting the money he (reportedly) wants is mid table Prem or Saudi; he should stay and get on with being captain.
