CM: Champions League campaign ends for Milan but Pioli saves his job

AC Milan needed to win in Newcastle not only to keep their European campaign alive but also to save Stefano Pioli’s job from potentially being under threat, a report claims.

As Calciomercato.com recall, Milan won in Newcastle with an excellent second half comeback, but they will feel disappointed because they have to say goodbye to the Champions League because they ended up finishing third.

However, it is only Milan’s second ever win in England in the competition and it came thanks to a performance with great spirit during a defensive emergency, so there are still positives to take from the game.

The report goes on to mention that by winning the final game of the Champions League group stage, Pioli might just have saved his job. A defeat would have meant crashing out of Europe entirely, but now there is the Europa League to compete in during the new year.

A negative result at St. James’ Park would have put Pioli’s position as the head coach under some threat, as alluded to by CEO Giorgio Furlani who dialled up the pressure with his pre-match comments.

    1. The guy’s got 9 lives. Every time it seems he’s at the end of the road something happens to keep him in the job. Pioli for life.🙄

  1. Pioli still deserves the sack, this result is still not good enough for him to keep his job. This is a good time for the management to make the change to start with a new coach in January.

A good coach would have inspired his players to score as many goals to go through in the champions league.

He was content to play the rest of the game out and stay in Europe. Milan belongs in the champions league not Europa.

Please sack Pioli, our city rivals and other Italian teams are in the champions league we are in Europa and we will not win it if Pioli stays on.

        1. Nope. PSG had a better head-to-head (4-2) against us so it didn’t matter how many we scored against Newcastle. We had to hope Dortmund did us a favor by winning (didn’t happen) so Europa League it is.

  2. Pioli’s time is up. He can’t set-up the midfield properly, zero offensive tactics and every game is a drag with him. Also, I’m sure he’s going through a rocky time with his lover.

  3. The victory is pleasing but, regrettably, this great club can not go any further with Mr Pioli at the helm.
I have feeling that top four could be a struggle whilst we watch Inter potentially take the second star. Not happy.

  4. Pioli has done a brilliant job so far and is a great coach .we played extremely well in the second half against Newcastle and fully deserved the win ..
Big Mike super as was tomori ..Florenzie was a surprise to me ,,and he also did well …the midfield however was disappointing,,,Loftus Cheek was below standard as was reindeirs …Oliver Giroud worked hard as usual but did not make much impact apart from a sublime pass for pulisic to score ..
When poili made his substitutions we looked unplayable and we could have scored four goals..
Great contribution from jovic and from okafor ,,and his super pass to chuckwezi ,,,what a finnish and what a goal from him …
Rafeo leao got criticised,,but he was a handful for Newcastle to defend against ,,yes his finishing was not good ,and yes he should have scored a goal ,but just remember he has been out for a while …He will be vital to our progress not only in the leauge ,but also in the Europa leauge .
My man of the match goes to our under appreciated coach Pioli …tactically brilliant substitutions at the right time …We have a very good team …still lots to play for …Yes a brilliant result last night especially away from home at Newcastle..

  5. Again, I don’t think Pioli is going anywhere until the summer. I’m not happy about EL as I think it will take away from the domestic form. pLaying on Thursdays means less time to be ready for the weekend fixtures.

Top4 position is more important than EL, and either way I don’t think we’re winning it. Doubt we’ll beat the Top4 in EL.
