CM: Calabria and Florenzi not irreplaceable – Milan’s plan to sign a new starting right-back

By Oliver Fisher -

AC Milan are in a position where they can now look to seize opportunities that emerge to strengthen the squad, with an eye on the right-back role.

According to Calciomercato.com, Milan are in the market for a left-back who is able to be a more reliable deputy to Theo Hernandez and a centre-back as well, while a young centre-forward could arrive to add more cover for Olivier Giroud.

However, the right-back role could become topical again too, given that Davide Calabria and Alessandro Florenzi – the first two choices for that role – are not irreplaceable.

Milan’s idea is to bring a new potential starter in, but a large investment in a new right-sided defender will be postponed to summer 2024.

Wilfried Singo of Torino and Ivan Fresneda of Real Valladolid should not be considered as priorities because the former does not convince Pioli and the latter has a large asking price.

      1. Back in my day no one had even heard of the Bosman rule and leagues had limits on how many foreigners they could have. Milan played almost 1,5 seasons without a defeat. Good times, good times.

Then again… We didn’t have internet and couldn’t watch every match as today.

      2. Calabria has 1 goal and 5 assists in 33 games last year. Hakimi, one of the best RBs in the sport, has 5 goals and 6 assists in 39 games. Reece James has 2 goals and 2 assist in 24 games. Singo has 2 goals and 3 assists in 35 games.

Calabria also absolutely dominated Kvaratskhelia in UCL, one of the main reasons why we won against Napoli. He’s also an important leader.

Maybe he’s not the most spectacular player on FIFA nor he’s featured in fashion events or what, but he’s a very good right back and every Serie A team would welcome him.

          1. Mancini continued to pick Florenzi over him even though Florenzi was his back up at Milan….

Managers have different preferences. Again they don’t have a neat little table like in FIFA where you pick the players with the highest ratings.

        1. It really shouldn’t require fans pointing this stuff out to other fans for those fans to want to support their captain and a player for their own club.

I honestly can’t see the point of being a fan of team where you don’t actually support the players who play for the team and spend your whole time speculating about what other players could join the team.

Some of these people don’t seem to have been capable of even experiencing the joy of the title win or any of the other successes of the past 3 years. They certainly haven’t shown their appreciation for the players who helped deliver these successes preferring instead to focus on their imaginary players with imaginary successes.

          1. Yeah football has changed. You would think that transfers all over the place would mostly please agents, but it seems like fans love it also.

      3. So what do you think happened?

Did a football mad country of 60m people just stop producing players?

And how come when the youth teams do well at European level they still can’t make it through?

  1. I went to work the other day and my company said that it was thinking of replacing one of the directors in a few years. For some reason it impacted morale.

  2. Read the paper from Calciomercato, it’s pure speculation based on the previous rumours about Singo and Fresneda. I guess Pioli still considers Calabria as his captain and a firm starter.

    1. True.

Unfortunately football transfers and alien sightings are two things the media can write about without fear of defamation.

  3. Calciomercato headline.. milans plan to buy a new rb (bs btw)
Finishing sentence. Singo and Fresneda are not targets….
    Foking morons those “journalists”

  4. If this came out 2 weeks ago, it would have made some sense, but since Pioli made it clear that we don’t need a RB (Calabria, Kalulu, Florenzi, Salamander) and canceled the Singo for Assias deal, this story only can only serve to show you just how incompetent folks over at calciomercato are. Bunch of clowns.
