CM: Milan put renewal talks for key man on hold after recent struggles

By Oliver Fisher -

AC Milan have put renewal talks with Suso on hold after his poor start to the season, according to the latest reports.

The Spaniard was linked with an exit over the summer amid doubts over his ability to adapt as a trequartista in the 4-3-1-2 formation new head coach Marco Giampaolo prefers to use.

La Gazzetta dello Sport claimed that Fiorentina were interested in a move for Suso, while Roma and Lyon were also linked by a number of different outlets, though he ended up staying at Giampaolo’s request.

Reports then emerged suggesting that Milan are looking to remove his €38m release clause, but that he would require a pay rise in order to do so, as Calciomercato.com stated.

Now, the same outlet has offered an update on Suso’s future, claiming that the extension of his contract – expiring in 2022 – is on stand-by for the moment.

However, the 25-year-old’s will is to remain at Milan and regain his form in order to return to the national team, having been left out of the most recent squads.

Giampaolo meanwhile will continue to bet on a player he views as possessing quality, the report concludes.
