CM: Milan could reinforce their defence in the January window – the latest

By Isak Möller -

AC Milan struggled defensively in the game against Inter and while that was also because of two injuries, the depth is somewhat lacking in that department. Therefore, there could be some movement in January.

The Rossoneri conceded five goals in the big derby and thus didn’t stand a chance, even if Rafael Leao brought some hope with his 2-1 goal. Clearly, the absence of both Pierre Kalulu and Fikayo Tomori (the Scudetto pairing) hurt Stefano Pioli’s men.

According to Calciomercato.com, the Milan management decided to focus on the midfield and attack this summer mercato and could remedy their mistake in January. In fact, they could look to make one or two reinforcements for the defence.

Fode Ballo-Toure left on deadline day and Mattia Caldara is still in the squad, meaning it was hard for the Rossoneri management to do much in defence this summer. Marco Pellegrino did arrive but he replaced Matteo Gbbia, who left for Villarreal quite early in the summer.

In short, now there is some room for the Rossoneri management to act and they will certainly look for opportunities.

  1. Yeah Pioli completely got the tactical part of the game wrong. He knew that inter plays a counter attacking style of football against him. He needed a solid defensive unit, but with the absence of his starter and second starter-he should have changed the strategy, but he didn’t. Poor from him and if the management is as serious about having a winning team, then I imagine Pioli is closer to the exit doors now.

  2. In the first 10 minutes I saw that it would be a difficult game for Milan, RLC was pulled back and I think it would have been more useful if Pioli had left him in the same position as in the first 3 games, Pulisic didn’t even show up mentally for the game, if he had already chosen the old formation, it should have been Pulisic behind the attackers and Chukwu on the right, when Inter defends there are five players against our 3, in the middle Inter’s 5 against our 4, mission failed..

  3. Botman, Kessie, Hakan…just saying, someone wanted to keep these players and buy them at all costs, everything was close to being sealed, then another intervened with his computer data to decide their services weren’t required, kept offering low ball contracts, refusing to offer fair prices.

Now you see what consistency, preparation and continued supported investment looks like for 7 years against minimum expenses, lack of vision, mediocrity. Moneyball works to compete in a mid level league in France, can get you slightly above a certain baseline. Against the best, it stands no chance and the gaps will show, don’t say I told you so.

Krunic was fantastic again..Great job selling Tonali. Got smoked even worst than last derby, it gets more pitiful every one that passes.

    1. We got outbid by SAUDIS for Botman!

Kessie ended up playing for SAUDIS.

Hakan is a rat and we won the title the season he left.

There’s nobody on the planet that could’ve got those playing for Milan.

No, the players I’m annoyed about are the ones we forced out including Tonali.

And, except for Hakan, our other former players who play for Inter: Darmian could’ve been our FB for the past 20 years, and Acerbi our CB for 15 years (had we supported him through his personal problems).

We never needed Tonali had we just kept one of Cristante or Locatelli who now both play for two of our direct rivals.

That’s what infuriates me. Not players who were mercenaries.

      1. It is documented, Hakan left because we refused to give him 200k to match his asking price. He was offered almost double by Inter to sign for them after we told him to beat it. I will ask you who performed last night, Krunic or Hakan? What about all the games before, tell me when Krunic was better than him. They will offer him what they refused to give Hakan to keep him around. Swallow that pill. Our American owners were rats, not Chana

Kessie was used by Barca, they got him for free and was played as a backup for their academy players. He still is better than our midfield. As far as I recalled, none of our players in that position were offered a transfer there because they all sucked for their teams for over 2 years or have been playing in unproven leagues. I one season he will earn as much as he would signing that pitiful 4.5 million euro contract we refused to raise. Our midfiled has been shit since he left.

We spent 20 on RLC, 20 on Santa, 20 on Musah, plus wages. The next question to ask is, would we had played better by spending the same or less to keep Kessie, Hakan and Tonali.

        1. “We spent 20 on RLC, 20 on Santa, 20 on Musah, plus wages. The next question to ask is, would we had played better by spending the same or less to keep Kessie, Hakan and Tonali.”

This is completely wrong. Tonali’s transfer fee alone was more than the fees paid for those 3, and the wages of the players who left are much higher than the 3 players Milan have now that you mentioned. So categorically it would have been MORE expensive to do what you described, not “the same or less”. And that’s assuming that it was even possible in the first place. You’re entitled to your own opinions, but not your own facts.

        2. Clubs (except for ones fuelled by fossil fuels) have a finite amount of money.

I am not going to criticise a club for not having enough money.

Hakan left Milan and Milan went on to win the Scudetto with Krunic. End of.

Every team has a bogey team that’s got virtually nothing to do with ability.

For years Milan struggled against Sassuolo. Did Sassuolo have a better squad in those years? No.

Last season Milan had the beating of Napoli (the actually Scudetto winners) and couldn’t figure out Inter (the actual 3rd placed team).

Now if we only have X budget then that is all the more reason not to revolutionise a squad that actually had a core of players who had won the Scudetto.

Instead we should’ve spent X (whatever that is) on key additions to the squad. What we really needed was an Ibra or Giroud type signing – a proven winner to lift the squad.

          More so given Ibra retired.

Instead we ripped the soul (Maldini and Tonali) from the team just as our heart (Ibra) was stepping back.

It was never going to end well.

Now stop defending the mercenaries. They are everything that’s wrong with modern football.

  4. Maxime Esteve CB or Morato or Carmo or Inacio
Lutsharel Geertruida RB or Jordan Teze or Sacha Boey
Adrien Truffert LB or Melvin Bard or Josh Doig
Jonathan David ST or Gift Emmanuel Orban or
Terem Moffi or Youssef En Nesyri
Arthur Vermeeren CDM Cheick Doucoure or Yossouf Fofana or Salis Ahmed Samed one of each positions I mentioned should be bought immediately my preferences are RB Lutsharel Geertruida from feyernoord LB adrien Truffert from Stade Rennais CB Maxime Esteve from Montpelier ST Jonathan David from LOSC Lille and CDM Arthur Vermeeren from Royal Antiwerp

  5. It’s crystal clear that we had problem on our defensive part last season. And it’s surprising that we didn’t do anything on the previous massive mercato.

Remember the season we won Scudetto by being the best defensive team? Yes, the first target after that season was no other than a CB to reinforce the defensive line even further. Shame that we didn’t have the money ready. That’s called a vision.

  6. More than 100 million spend and they still need reinforcements in January. Maldini begged for reinforcements last summer. These idiots have nothing. I don’t understand why we bought younus musah for 🤔🤔…oh yes, he is American 😬😬

  7. Im all for stronger defenders, but that will NOT solve our conceding problem. Again and again that highline works only if you have proper midfielders or play agaisnt a weaker team. Big teams will tear us up. We dont have a box box to box player, or an engine that doesnt stop running and tracking back. Krunic doesn’t fit that profile. Small pioli will not realize that, still mid table mentality as a coach.

  8. I interpret this as panic in response to Inter loss.

The problem was not with the CBs. It was with the tactics.

You can’t play without Kalulu/Tomori and maintain that high line against Thuram and Dumfries who are seriously quick. You definitely can’t maintain the high line against a counter attacking team with a really quick 9, while Theo is spending all of his time inverted.

Be more Italian and less European.
