CM: Milan star could have ended up at Napoli with Gattuso – the background

By Isak Möller -

After a few years of failing to find consistency, resulting in some criticism from the fans, Franck Kessie has become one of the best midfielders in Serie A. In the last year, he has been immense for Milan.

In Stefano Pioli’s 4-2-3-1, the Ivorian has found his perfect partner in the midfield tandem, namely Ismael Bennacer. Together, they have been unstoppable in both phases of the games, helping the Rossoneri take home many points.

As highlighted by Calciomercato.com, Kessie was also fundamental when Gennaro Gattuso was in charge, playing to the right in his 4-3-3. He was forced to work a lot though, as Suso was focused on attack, and this surely affected him.

He hasn’t always been on top, as mentioned, and there had been talks about an exit. Gattuso, taking over Napoli, asked sporting director Cristiano Giuntoli to sign him but the high demands of €30m meant negotiations never even started.

Of course, a transfer isn’t an option today, with Milan keen on keeping him for many more years. On Sunday, Kessie will be looking to dominate the midfield along with his partner and give Milan a huge advantage.
