CM: One metric places Pioli as Milan’s best-ever coach – the numbers

By Euan Burns -

There are a thousand different ways to judge how good a football coach actually is, and one such way is points per game.

As pointed out by Calciomercato.com, when you take a look at Stefano Pioli’s points per game record in Serie A since he became the coach of the Rossoneri, he is actually the best that there has ever been.

Some remarkable names like Fabio Capello, Carlo Ancelotti and Arrigo Sacchi have coached Milan over the years, but they cannot beat Pioli’s record of 2.13 points per game since he took over on October 9, 2019.

Only one coach, Lajos Czeizler who was in charge from 1949 to 1952, has got the same record as Pioli in that regard.

Capello and Sacchi had records of 2.01 and 1.95 respectively, whilst the legendary Nereo Rocco was on 1.89. In terms of a more modern comparison, Massimiliano Allegri’s points-per-game record at Milan was 1.81.

Pioli is seeking to back this up with another Serie A title this season. When all competitions are taken into consideration, Pioli’s points per game sits at 1.92.

  1. Im not sure to laugh or cry at this info..
Then again Milan was never a Serie a powerhouse like merde juve 4 example. Most of the legendary coaches are legendary ‘cuz of their eu wins

  2. All of this headlines regarding Pioli as the best coach ever, don’t take into consideration the fact that Capello, Liedholm, Sacchi and many other coaches of the past were in the 2 Points per game era…

and were playing in a more competitive 14-18 team league for a lot of it, meaning less throwaway teams to boost your record.

Pioli might not be getting the love he deserves but he’s also not as good as this headline would make you believe he is.

    1. It is mentioned that a coach in the 40s/50s era had the same number of points per match as Pioli, so clearly the old numbers are recalculated with the 3 points per win. Fascinating that Pioli comes out with better stats than the old legends, considering how hard criticism he faces. Totally unfair. He is doing great!

    1. “Capello and Sacchi had records of 2.01 and 1.95 respectively, whilst the legendary Nereo Rocco was on 1.89.”
      Read the article next time

      1. Maybe you should learn how to read instead, when did I ever mention that the article didn’t convert 3 point into 2?

I literally stated that they were playing in the 2 point era, “””””in which getting a draw was twice as valuable as it is today, making it flawed to begin with, and that’s without considering there were less teams back then.”””” , next time I’ll put the context behind what I say in quotation marks so that you’ll understand me right away ok?

A bit asinine to think I read ‘2.01’ and didn’t notice that they did convert it, infact I assumed everyone did notice hence the need to reiterate the context from which they’ve taken this numbers from.

  3. Pioli is much better than he’s given credit for, by fans. He got 10 new signings and has integrated them beautifully, and has mentored the team to have high morale. After he got empowered by the administration and given a say in what players he needed, our summer mercato was better than the previous ones when he didn’t have much of a say. He successfully changed the formation to 4-3-3 and we won 7 out of 8 league games with it. He is subbing earlier and has been less rigid, accepting new and young players more easily. He’s tried new things like inverted backs.

Sure, Inzaghi has his number. But other than repeatedly losing to Inter (which, yes, obviously is upsetting) he’s been doing quite well. I think he is coaching better this season than in previous seasons. Now, he does need to beat Inter next time. We have to be less daring and more defensive against them because their counterattacks are lethal. He repeated old mistakes in the derby. I hope he has learned some lessons from the 5-1 disaster.

In summary, yes, Pioli has shortcomings, but he’s still a good coach and in any case much better than what some fans here think.

    1. I support your view on Pioli records as the best coach. To be sincere, this season is the first time he gets players up to the standard of Milan.

Throughout the previous seasons, he only tried to manage the players that were not so good at his disposal and he won and the league and reached semi final of the champions league.

Don’t forget that we had 5 coaches before him and none of them achieved was he did. Most of them did not even spend up to a season.

Look at Chelsea and Manchester United with all the money to hire great coaches and buy great players, they are still struggling badly.

Let’s just appreciate and support him. I wish he win the champions league soon to crown himself as one of the best coaches.

  4. Said this many times they he’s ones of the best coaches all time and is doing with a far faaaaar inferior squad that his predecessors. If you’ve been through Sacchi, Capello, Terim, Ancelotti, Montella, Gaimpaolo, Gattuso, Inzaghi, Brocchi, Allegri (off the top) then you’d know we’re doing quite well with him. And that’s without legendary defenders, legendary strikers and legendary midfielders.
Yes he’s limited and yes S.Inzaghi owns him but he’s still good. I respect him so it’s why I can criticize him too

      1. Buddy, he doesn’t have legendary names in his team. We won in Europe “recently” because of players like Gullit, Van Basten, Rijkard, Maldini, Baresi, Kaka, Pirlo, Seedorf. There absolutely no one in the team at that level right now that can elevate them to win in Europe, favourable draw aside. Even domestically he’s still one of the best.
Sometimes I feel you guys weren’t around between 2012ish to maybe 2018

      2. > Pioli helped the club won the 19th scudetto after the club beeing in the gutter for more than a decade.
        > Pioli bring back the club to Champions League again and even reach semi final after the club has been absent for almost a decade.
        > Pioli hard work has been approved and appreciated by many soccer legends because he achieved a lot with very limited resources.
        > Some ungrateful fans name Nino: no no no, the conversation starts when Pioli wins in Europe

        FVCK OFF IDIOTA!

  5. Like some rightly said here, the squad at his disposal is quite inferior compared to the golden age, secondly, Inter has more quality depth than us, which was evident last season, looking at his tactical nuances tells a lot about his capabilities, give it to him. We’re more confident and hopeful entering matches now against anybody, unlike a few seasons ago that we were scared confronting middle table teams and never made champions League.

    1. The squad is inferior to the squads from the Golden age but also the league is even more Inferior to the quality of the league from the golden ages

  6. Coaches of yesteryears faced Batistuta, Bierhoff, Totti, Baggio, Ronaldo9 and the likes
Pioli faces about 5 wc players for the entire season, none of which are even close to top10.

    1. Sure, he’s clueless. That’s why we lost all league games this season and are #20, fighting relegation.

Oh wait. I checked. We actually won 7 out of 8 league games (more than any of the other 19 teams), and we are #1. This, while battling with the need to integrate ten new players.

Give me a “clueless” guy who achieves these rather miraculous results, any day.

  7. Just like all coaches pioli has flaws and strengths. For one pioli is very good at building a relationship with his players. He gains trust of each and every single one and I haven’t heard many players bad mouth him. They actually see him as a father figure.

I think one of pioli’s biggest flaws is coming up with ideas on how to break down a defensive team. Going from side to side passing is one of the most annoying things to watch.

That being said pioli is the best coach we’ve had since ancelotti and I’m grateful for him. If he were to stay I hope he’d grow with the team and get better but also if results just don’t come and something opens up in the future, who knows?

  8. Come guys what are we talking about, Pioli is far more better than what you think, sack him today an English club will buy the next day

  9. Ibra is the real coach in current milan. Let nobody deceive you.

The curent players got to their level because of Ibra not Pioli.

Comparing the legendary stars of yesterday with the players today shows another weakness of Pioli.

Imagine Leao, The etc are coached by Sacchi, Capella or Ancelloti, the current players will be Super Stars.

Kaka came to Milan as a green horn with potential just like lmao but coaching made the difference.

Can anybody see the difference in Bellighan and Vinocus since Ancelloti became their coach?

  10. Ibra is the real coach in current milan. Let nobody deceive you.

  11. I respect Pioli,he transformed Milan in 2 years and bought good players for the future,we just need to be consistent and stay 1st into the new year…..well done coach !!!!
