CM: Pioli remains under contract with Milan – what it means for the future

By Oliver Fisher -

Some interesting news has emerged regarding Stefano Pioli’s contract situation with AC Milan, and it has been confirmed that the club are still paying him.

Calciomercato.com speaks of ‘tense’ hours at Milan following the draw against Lazio which not only continued the winless start to the season but also showed that the team have not resolved the problems already highlighted in the first two games.

While Paulo Fonseca’s position ends up in the crosshairs of criticism, a detail emerges: Pioli is still under contract with the Rossoneri. The two are not connected, because Fonseca is not at immediate risk and will only be further evaluated after the games against Venezia, Liverpool and Inter.

On May 24, Milan and Pioli officially said goodbye, with the Rossoneri making the announcement on their channels. The supporters got to bid farewell after the last match of the season against Salernitana a few days later.

It was a parting that took place a year ahead of the natural expiry of the contract (June 2025), but it was not entirely formalised. It was not a sacking: instead the parties agreed that the working relationship would not continue and would be terminated as soon as Pioli found a new club.

Despite having considered various possibilities in Italy (Bologna and Napoli), France (Rennes, where he would have reunited with Ricky Massara) and above all Saudi Arabia (Al-Ittihad), nothing materialised. Thus, Pioli is therefore still under contract with Milan.

The Rossoneri must pay him €4m net for the next season presuming he does not take a job. If Milan were to decide to remove Fonseca from his position they are almost certainly not going to turn back to Pioli, so – net of possible resolutions – the club could find themselves with three coaches under contract.

  1. Too late for Pioli to comeback and clean up Fonseca and the management mess. Heck, i don’t know if he wants to comeback either when he got disrespected by the management who fired him when he still have one year contract.

  2. Allegri might not be the fan favorite choice but I really think that he is best choice for current situation. Our team has player with technical abilities upfront and they can somehow score goals and our deepest problem is defence and there is not another person who can build good defence and defensive tactics.. otherwise this team is Garbage, we need someone with authority.. Of Course, I would want someone like Klopp, De Zerbi, Sarri but they don’t seem likely for now.. I would welcome anyone but please let Fonseca leave.. I am disgusted and feel pain watching my Milan plays such meaningless games..

  3. Fonseca ,is not qualified to be called coach ,pls nobody shud disrespect pioli by comparing him to fonseca ,pioli is a far better coach than this rotten garbage of a coach ,it’s quite unfortunate how fonseca will ruin this team

  4. Y’all pls stop!!! We’re acting like we didn’t watch the lack of tactics Milan under Pioli just cos Fonseca has started slow. Can we chill pls?? It’s been only 3 games and everyone is sounding like Fonseca has been here for 10-15 games. He deserves some grace for a while cos it’s not easy to get players out of the funk of Pioli’s tactics after 5 yrs. Slot has been successful at Liverpool so far cos a coach with a good tactics left something good behind for him and he didn’t need to tweak too much of his tactics to make it work. We have a new coach that needs time to build a totally new idea in the head of this team cos we can’t deal with any remnants of Pioli’s tactics pls. We need a complete overhaul in mindset and tactics. We shouldn’t rush to start talking about firing him yet. Give him time. (And this is coming from someone that was not a fan of hiring Fonseca by the way)

    1. True, Fonseca and the team need a little bit more time to settle, Fonseca has given the team quite a good shape, it’s a matter of time for the players to pick up.

  5. The owner of this club is very selfish we miss Silvio Berlusconi and captain Paulo maldini so any way this American man must sell the club Arab business men like Qatar the one who was interesting buying Manchester United last season this American man always is looking for cheap players law coaches for reason salary he doesn’t want top coaches reason for salary so you guys tell him sell the club that is he fired our legend captain our blood maldini and Ricky masara we don’t want selfish man that is the reason Milan is going down and became low club

  6. We should have hired Flick, De Zerbi, Tedesco or Conte when we had the chance. Lord knows how and why people think Cardinale and Zlatan are ‘reviving’ the club.

  7. why not go for klop former liverpool coauch since he is without a club right or u remain pacient with fosca let see if the dias wil favour him as time goes on then along we hire guadiola as new coauch right

  8. I have said many times, conte is the man.

Some players already contaminated with dangerous virus called “star/icon syndrome”, and that kind of virus spreads fast in perfect environment like our locker room.

Coach that has ego supremacy can make it. Conte is one of few hard tough coach who will scream for 90 minutes. Not fonseca who is more of an forgiving dad to me.

  9. This is how many ‘sackings’ work in football, there’s nothing unusual about this.

I was never a big fan of Pioli leaving, but we’ve moved on now so time to back Fonseca and see how he can get the team playing in a few weeks’ time.

  10. Why are they actually waiting for games vs Venezia, Inter and Liverpool to dismiss Fonseca??? Do they really think Fonseca can win against Inter and Liverpool??? At this point even Venezia can comfortably hope to get point or even three against us!!! Just fire the guy and bring someone with brain!!!
