CM: The problems Milan must resolve as break arrives at the right time

By Oliver Fisher -

The game between Lazio and AC Milan at the Stadio Olimpico was probably entertaining for the neutral, but for fans of both clubs it did nothing to dispel the early-season doubts.

Calciomercato.com write that the game ‘confirmed that Milan are in trouble’, with just two points amassed from the first three league games of the season which puts them well behind rivals Inter and Juventus, plus even Napoli.

The team who took to the field in the capital ‘seemed confused from a tactical point of view, not very brilliant from an athletic one and nervous among their main protagonists’. Lazio exposed all of Milan’s weaknesses with a spirited recovery in the second half, scoring twice inside a few minutes.

The departments were too stretched, Noah Okafor struggled as a striker and the team slipped into the familiar negative habits that characterised the disappointing and difficult end to the Stefano Pioli era.

There are two themes that dominate the post-match discussions: Fonseca’s initial selections and that ugly image of Theo Hernández and Rafael Leão far from the coach and their team-mates in the cooling break.

Fonseca was right to try to pour water on the fire, as the Frenchman did on Milan TV as well after the game. The moment is too delicate and the team need to close ranks internally, so the break comes at just the right time.

Leão and Hernández paid for their lazy performance last Saturday in Parma as Fonseca took risks, with the awareness that these are not two players like the others but the vice-captain and the most obvious talent in the squad.

Faced with such a complex situation, the advice is for the management to intervene to understand the intentions of the left-back in terms of the future and his renewal, as well as what Fonseca plans to do with the new signings and to fix the defensive woes.

  1. From the beginning, the selection of the Coach was wrong. Trapped by the lure of minimal salary.
If the management only pursues their personal gain. They would be better off selling vegetables at the market.
    This team is truly destroyed.

    1. And to your point, this is not going to get better after the break, from the perfomances so far it might just get worse. Agian, without sounding like a broken record, this coach has shown so far he does not have the personality to manage this squad. I might also add without been disrespectful, he may also lack the tactical ability for a team like Milan.

  2. sure everyone is disappointed with 2 points after 3 games and obvious issues. but i still dont think that it has to be only a bad thing. at least the issues are on the table cristal clear and looks like Fonseca is willing to fix them, not afraid of unpopular or risky decisions. Management wanted to close the gap to inter, and the main reasons for the gap are they rotate better and their stars are working for the team. Fonseca showed already that he isnt afraid to use the full squad, if he can inject a Pulisic mentality into Theo and Leao we can have a very bright near future. If he fails (due to broken relationship with them), management can sack him and the next coach has a much better starting situation cause both player are already alerted and maybe reflected about being teamplayers.

  3. I really doubt Fonseca can fix his mess after two weeks of international break.

The problem here are not just Fonseca is a clueless manager but he already lost the locker room when he blamed every Milan players after lost to Parma.

Now he lost another respect from Theo and Leao when he benched them but turns out they’re the one who saved Milan from losing 3 points.

Fonseca not just a 3rd class tactician but he doesn’t know how to handle the locker room. What a great job from the management.

  4. Fonseca has done the right thing, regardless of the results. Three of the four goals we conceded in the first two games were caused by Theo. Leao was really selfish against Parma, and we ended up losing many scoring chances. This situation is frustrating for the coach. If these guys had played preseason games with these attitudes, we would have been beaten silly. Those who did, played with their hearts. The coach also has new players, who came in late, and have to be integrated into the team. He can’t get this done in three games, no matter how good the players are. Mbappe is still having a hard time at Madrid. Hazard did too. The break would have helped, but, almost all our players would be away. I didn’t expect much from the game, seeing the probable lineup. I saw Theo play for France two months ago, and, I was so disappointed with his defending in the last two games. Fonseca was not my choice, but, I’m glad we have a coach who can make decisions, and also force the hands of the management as far as getting players for the club is concerned.

  5. only 2 solutions i see: couch need moved from first team Leao and Theo if not public apologise for team mate, or suck couch before will be more worst.
At the end only we fans have damage.I will not go at games and lose my time and money if not this problem resolved. If they clowns im not.

  6. Our problem is only just two things
    1. Is our attacking midfield for now pulisic and musah should rule the attacking midfield
    2. Our defender we need Gabbia and Pavlovic
Then we need Chaka Traore and liberali to support leao and chukwueze
Honestly Acmilan have a poor attacking midfield problem Loftus cheek is not qualified to be in the first eleven our defence midfield is complete rejnder and Fofana are perfect so they deserve first eleven

  7. I was backing Fonseca , but now, he needs to go .. I know it is “just” a 3th round, but if he doesn’t has good relationship with players, how he can training them??? So many question about Fonseca’s chaotic football and motivations, willingness…
I think our management need to do hard decision. I know they already pay to Pioli and Fonseca , but after 3th round we can be 7 point behind 1th…
Fonseca will be there until 5th round, then after Liverpool killed us and Inter win 5:1 they fired him because it will be 10-13 points behind the 1st team
In my opinion we have great players , now need better coach for saving this season…
