CM: Rangnick interested in bringing Schalke defensive starlet to Milan on low-cost deal

By Oliver Fisher -

AC Milan have cast their eyes upon Schalke 04’s defensive starlet Malick Thiaw ahead of a possible move, according to a report.

Elliott Management have preferred a strategy of buying young, talented players on low salaries who can be developed into future stars since taking control of the Rossoneri two years ago.

Calciomercato.com provide the latest name of that category to be linked with a move to Milan in Schalke centre-back Malick Thiaw. They described the 18-year-old as a defender with imposing physique, determination and personality, and also a player who is at ease with the ball between his feet

Interestingly, he also knows how to player as a midfielder as he has shown an innate eye for goal. He is actually the top scorer for Schalke U19s this season with eight goals, but the report warns that overconfidence sometimes leads him to make trivial mistakes which resulted in opportunities and goals for his opponents.

On March 7 he collected his first official minutes in Bundesliga action against Hoffenheim . A tangible sign of the confidence that the club has in Thiaw, who passed through the youth systems at Fortuna Dusseldorf, Bayer Leverkusen and Borussia Monchengladbach.

There has been no lack of combinations with Liverpool’s Joel Matip, who grew up like him at Schalke before moving to England.

His current contract expires in June 2021 and for several clubs this represents an opportunity for an investment on a low-priced talent. His name is also known by Ralf Rangnick, a strong candidate for Milan’s bench, who has him on his list of targets should he accept the job.
