CM: Roma win race for Lyon midfielder despite Milan and Betis interest

By Oliver Fisher -

It seems as though Roma have won the race to sign Houssem Aouar from Lyon when his contract expires at the end of the season.

As Calciomercato.com write, it was a month ago that Aouar was in the capital to visit Roma and also undergo some medical cheks, and now he can be considered a Roma player. The French-Algerian midfielder chose the Giallorossi despite the interest from Betis and Leverkusen and Milan.

In the end the courtship of Tiago Pinto has won and it started last summer, and now it seems the time has come for signatures. The midfielder will sign a contract with Roma once his contract with Lyon expires at the end of June.

He will therefore be the first reinforcement for next season regardless of whether Jose Mourinho stays or not. In his experience in France, Aouar amassed 48 goals and 37 assists in 258 matches, showing his ability to be decisive.

    1. Agreed. Steal to get such a player for zero transfer fee who is only 24 years old…..Big miss considering our limited transfer budget

  1. Nice catch. I can see why he would pick Roma, not a lot of competition in midfield. Betis is well covered in AM and Milan has strong players in mid, hard to take a spot

    1. When you say “Milan has strong players in mid”, are you talking about being physically strong? Because Aouar easily walks into our starting line up based on football ability. Only 1 Milan midfielder, Tonali, should have a somewhat guaranteed spot in the first 11, the other midfield spots are up for grabs.
Aouar is more of an offensive midfielder and he would be playing at Milan in the 10 hole where we definitely don’t have “strong players”.

      1. i dont think you get what Pioli wants in his #10 role.. I mean there is a big reason why krunić and kessie were playing there last season and now Bennacer. Btw i think Bennacer is the superior player that has an edge over Aouar in every single category and is our best midfildrer by a mile.. Add the fact that Tonali is always gonna be a starter and Krunić is very liked by Pioli, Aouar would have a very hard time getting first 11 play time. It is what it is… And that is what ia mean by Milan has strong players. There is no hole in #10 or have you not been watching Milan matches in the last month?

        1. Pioli was forced to play Kessie , Krunic and now Bennacer in the 10 role because of how bad Brahim was last season and how bad CDK, and Brahim are this season.
Our fans are trying so hard to glorify our midfielders that they forget that a big part of the job of being a midfielder is PASSING and none of our midfielders can pass the ball, the least of all Bennacer. Bennacer bad pass to Theo in the 1st half almost end up costing Casale his teeth. If he could pass , Theo would have been clear on goal but instead he had to slow down and change direction just to get to that weak Bennacer pass. There are many examples of that. Krunic and Tonali are just as bad, but they are at least better defensively than Bennacer.
Also if Bennacer was by a mile our best midfielder why was he the part time bench player the last 2 years when Milan finished 2nd and won the scudetto? He was so bad this season in double pivot that Pioli has to play him in a new position.
Pioli is playing without a n10 lately because Milan doesn’t have a n10 worthy player in the squad.
Bennacer is so great that we finished last season scudetto run with 3 defensive midfielders Kessie, Tonali and Krunic, not Bennacer. That’s how much better by a mile he is.
The moment he got replaced by Krunic this season in the double pivot our defense immediately got better.

        2. Enlighten me please.
I like how someone says something you don’t like, you have nothing to say to counter their opinion, so the best way to respond is just to say you don’t understand football or you got no idea what Pioli wants from the n10.

          1. i dont think i will. it would be a waste of my time. Why would it be a waste of my time? Because you pretty clearly showed what you think of bennacer and someone who came to that conclusion is someone i have no bussines talking to

          2. 🤣🤣🤣
Waste of time because you have nothing to say.
It’s a waste of time to explain where I am wrong but it’s not a waste of time to keep wasting time saying that I don’t know what Pioli wants from the n10.
If you can’t explain, then you don’t know.
Regardless, have a good day buddy

        3. Remember the time before CdK, Diaz, Kessie, Krunic, Kessie, and even Meite rolling up our no. 10? Yes, there’s Hakan. I really don’t wanna say it, but Pioli clearly stated that he’s one the cores of our team (before that Euro and he decided to be the Judas).

The fact that there are so ‘many’ players have tried that position, only means that we still do not find a proper replacement that’s in line with Pioli’s idea.

          1. Yeah he was always a starter on the wing in 3 man mid or on AM after Ibra came.. I never liked him and at the time i thought Milan should sell him and keep Paqueta.
Milan been playing 4231 for 2 years now without the players for it. Should switch to 3 man mid and bring in a WC mezzala or give Pobega more chances, i think he could do very well in that role.
The AM is outdated nowadys anyway thats why Milan cant find a proper one..

    2. If a player chooses his club by how weak his spot is on that team, so he can play. I honestly don’t want a player like that in AC Milan… If a player as an individual does not have the mentality and belief that he could be a starter at a any club at some point don’t bother coming to Milan… That kind of thinking is perfect for Roma

      1. true enough.. Tho its just my speculation. who knows why he picked roma if he indeed did pick roma. Amybe the other clubs just were not straightforward enough in showing they want him.. who knows.. 😀

  2. Milan is going for young and cheap.

It is school of football. They take perspective players, who got opportunity, and if they manage to become strong players, they are “forced” to sign extension for less money.

Milan have good psychology about creating team that will be sustainable during decades.

    1. I think that’s my problem with Milan new philosophy, I like going for young but we keep missing on with the free stars, why didn’t we go for him or dybala or the Frankfurt forward? We just go for young and unproven or free old players, no in between

  3. I guess he was too creative and good for the Milan midfield. Pioli prefers midfielders who cannot make a pass forwards.

    1. Where is Roma in the standings? Also, where is Dybala? Oh wait, in the treatment room. Anyway, I don’t think they “beat” us to Dybala, since it doesn’t seem as though we made an attempt to sign him. These same loser directors signed a leftback who just ran 84 yards for a goal (and it wasn’t the first time) for just 20m. And he has goals and assists numbers comparable to attacking midfielders in each of his seasons with us. Just saying dude. You can’t win them all.

  4. Would have been great to see a 433 with Tonali, Bennacer and Aouar as our starting mids. Invest in a RW and ST and renew Leao. Team drastically improved. Instead we are considering buying Vranckx… wow.. what a joke.

  5. Absolutely gutted we didn’t get Aouar, especially as he’s a free so even with sign-on + agents commission is far less of a gamble than the likes if CDK.

Hopefully its because we have something else lined up but I fear it’ll be another fruitless summer signing the next Bakayoko/Dest/Origi that gets “spotted”

  6. Forget him, he’s overhyped.

Glad we missed out on him, I can guarantee you guys, without any iota of doubt, WE AREN’T GONNA MISS HIM IN THE SLIGHTEST WAY.

Common guys, stop talking like it’s Musiala we’re talking about.

  7. Every football pundit on tv have praised bennacer this season but a random dude is fighting to make us believe that bennacer can be replaced easily. Whatever dude whatever….

    1. Bennacer is the Kessie replacement, so why would the replacement not be easy to replace?
And can you come to your own conclusion about something based what you see or you always just listen to “TV pundits”?
Wasn’t Bennacer replaced already this season by Krunic in the defensive midfield?
Bennacer started the season in double pivot. Our defense looked like Swiss cheese. Krunic steps in his place, Bennacer gets moved up, our defense gets better while our offense gets worse.
Check back with your TV pundits

      1. Mr “according to stats”

I remember months ago I engaged in a fierce argument with you that Bennacer was not being used in his best position, fast forward, Pioli got baptised and changed his position like I opined, and the rest is history.

Look, if you understand football, you will clearly see that Bennacer’s characteristics suggests he be used higher up.

No magic bro, no stats bro. This is football. It is understanding.

        1. Same guy that was trying to convince people that Bennacer and Barella play the same position. Only people you can baptize is people that never seen Barella or Bennacer play football before.
Oh Bennacer got moved forward and the rest is history. Really? Milan has won 4 of their Last 13 games in serie A and have problems scoring goals. Yeah it works great with Bennacer playing forward.
We also knocked out Tottenham out of UCL without Bennacer in both games.
But you don’t like facts you like feelings. Well sorry to hurt your feelings but Bennacer was one of the worst players on the field in most of those games. One goal vs Lazio off of a mistake doesn’t change the fact that Milan needs and upgrade over Bennacer and Bennacer needs to go where he is best at, on the bench.
Compare Milan both defensively and offensively over the last 3 years when Bennacer starts vs when Bennacer is on the bench.
Facts don’t matter only feelings for Mr Baptizer

          1. LOL. You guys are hilarious. I love how these articles spark the “coulda, shoulda, woulda” wars.

  8. Another quality free agent player on an affordable salary lost to a team who can actually negotiate.

“In the end the courtship of Tiago Pinto has won and it started last summer, and now it seems the time has come for signatures”.

BTW Roma works with even less money than Milan does. But i bet the excuse will be that Milan’s interest was only made up by the media, just like with every other target that they wanted but couldn’t convince to sign.

  9. His stat playtime this season only 400minutes -470minutes. I dont know either he is injury prone or bench warmer so he have less minute play. I dont believe maldini serious want to sign him if AC Milan serious to sign him ,im sure he will choose ACM over Roma . Probably Maldini chasing more better midfield
